COMPLIMENTS AND THEIR RESPONSES FOUND IN THE MOVIE SERIES A CHRISTMAS PRINCE

Penelitian ini berfokus menyelidiki penggunaan ekspresi pujian dan respon pujian yang ditemukan dalam serial film Netflix berjudul A Christmas Prince. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis topik pujian, mengamati fungsi pujian dan menyelidiki tanggapan pujian yang digunakan oleh para karakter dalam serial film. Penulis menerapkan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk penelitian ini dengan mengumpulkan, mengklasifikasikan, menganalisis, menafsirkan, dan menarik kesimpulan dari data. Data diambil dari ucapan karakter dalam film yang berisi pujian dan tanggapan pujian. Dari identifikasi dan analisis, penelitian ini menemukan total 82 data yang teridentifikasi sebagai ekspresi pujian. Dalam hal topik pujian, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa empat klasifikasi topik pujian Wolfson (1983) ditemukan dalam serial film. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa specific-act/ability (Ab-Spa) muncul sebagai topik pujian yang paling digunakan dalam serial film dengan 32 kemunculan (39%). Adapun terkait fungsi pujian, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pujian yang digunakan oleh karakter dalam serial film A Christmas Prince memiliki tujuh fungsi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa expressing admiration or approval (EAA) menjadi fungsi pujian yang paling sering ditemukan dalam serial film dengan total 39 kemunculan (47,6%). Selain itu, hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa tidak semua jenis tanggapan pujian yang dikemukakan oleh Herbert (1986, 1990) ditemukan dalam serial film A Christmas Prince. Terlihat bahwa karakter hanya menggunakan 10 jenis tanggapan pujian dari total 12 klasifikasi. Mayoritas karakter menggunakan respon pujian appreciation token (AT) dalam menanggapi pujian. Dengan 34 kemunculan (41,5%), appreciation token (AT) muncul sebagai respon yang paling banyak digunakan dalam serial film.

This research focuses on investigating the use of the expressions of compliment and the compliment responses found in the Netflix movie series entitled A Christmas Prince. It aims to analyze the topics of compliments, to observe the functions of compliments and to investigate the compliment responses used by the characters in the movie series. The present writer applies a qualitative descriptive method in this research by collecting, classifying, analyzing, interpreting, and drawing conclusions from the data. The data are taken from the characters’ utterances in the movies containing compliments and compliment responses. From the identification and analysis, this research found a total of 82 data that are identified as compliment expressions. In terms of the topics of compliments, this research finds that Wolfson's four classifications topics of compliments are found in the movie series. The finding reveals that specific-act/ability (Ab-Spa) occurs as the most preferred topic of compliment used in the movie series with 32 occurrences (39%). As for the functions of compliments, this research shows that the compliments used by the characters in the movie series A Christmas Prince served seven functions. The result indicates that expressing admiration or approval (EAA) becomes the most frequent compliment function found in the movie series with a total of 39 occurrences (47.6%). Moreover, the result reveals that not all types of compliment responses proposed by Herbert (1986, 1990) are found in A Christmas Prince movie series. It is shown that the characters only used 10 types of compliment responses out of a total of 12 classifications. The majority of characters employed the compliment response appreciation token (AT) in responding to compliments. With 34 occurrences (41.5%), appreciation token (AT) appears as the most used response in the movie series.
