Semantic Preference and Semantic Prosody of Sustainable in the NOW Corpus

Berbagai solusi telah dikeluarkan selama bertahun-tahun untuk menghentikan perubahan iklim, krisis global paling kontroversial abad ke-21. Konsep keberlanjutan adalah salah satunya dan telah melingkupi pembahasan perubahan iklim sejak awal 2000-an. Hadirnya Sustainable Development Goals di tahun 2015 membuat kata sustainable semakin gencar beredar di media. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan wawasan dan meningkatkan kesadaran akan konsep keberlanjutan melalui representasi kata sustainable di media menggunakan Korpus NOW (News on the Web). Studi ini juga dapat memberikan pemahaman bagi peneliti masa depan dan pembelajar bahasa tentang analisis semantik di bawah koridor linguistik korpus. Dengan menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui antarmuka English-Corpora.org dalam bentuk kolokasi dan baris konkordansi. Kolokasi dianalisis lebih lanjut dengan bantuan alat USAS untuk menemukan preferensi semantik, sedangkan baris konkordansi diperiksa untuk menganalisis makna dan konteks untuk menentukan prosodi semantik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sustainable di Korpus NOW cenderung diasosiasikan dengan kolokasi terkait uang, SDGs, isu sosial dan kemanusiaan, serta lingkungan. Selanjutnya, kata pencarian memiliki kecenderungan untuk diasosiasikan dengan kolokasi yang menguntungkan, sehingga kata perncerian memiliki prosodi positif. Analisis ini menunjukkan bahwa representasi sustainable di media dipandang positif, tidak hanya sebagai cara hidup, tetapi juga sebagai cara berperilaku dalam banyak aspek yang mencakup kehidupan kita.

Various solutions have been issued for years to stop climate change, the most controversial global crisis of the 21st century. The concept of sustainability is one of them and has been surrounding the discussion of climate change since the early 2000s. The presence of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 made the word sustainable even more heavily circulated in media. Given this, this study aims to provide insights and raise awareness of the concept of sustainability through the representation of the word sustainable in media using the NOW (News on the Web) Corpus. This study can also provide understanding for future researchers and language learners concerning semantic analysis under the corpus linguistic corridor. Adopting qualitative research methods, the data is collected through the English-Corpora.org interface in a form of collocations and concordance lines. The collocations are analyzed further with the help of USAS tools to find the semantic preference, while the concordance lines are examined to analyze the meaning and context for determining the semantic prosody. The result shows that sustainable in the NOW Corpus tends to associate with collocates related to money, SDGs, social issues and humanity, as well as the environment. Furthermore, the node word has the tendency to be associated with favorable collocates, resulting in the node word having positive prosody. This analysis demonstrates that the representation of sustainable in media is seen as positive, not only as a way of living, but also as a way of behaving in a lot of aspects encompassing our lives.
