REPRESENTATION OF TRUMP'S ADMINISTRATION IN DEL TORO AND KRAUS' THE SHAPE OF WATER

The Shape of Water karya Guillermo Del Toro dan Daniel Kraus mengangkat isu tentang pemerintah yang otoriter yang menolak, menindas, dan menganiaya hak dan suara kelompok minor di AS dengan penerapan metode pustaka. Penelitian ini membahas tentang representasi dari pemerintahan Trump yang ditemukan didalam novel dan dampak dari aturan pemerintah otoriter terhadap masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana novel tersebut merepresentasikan Trump dan kelompok yang termarjinalkan di AS dan menyelidiki bagaimana novel tersebut mengkritisi pemerintahan Trump terhadap ras dan gender. Dalam melakukan penelitian, teori representasi digunakan sebagai pendekatan teoritis. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa novel The Shape of Water merupakan sebuah bentuk representasi dari pemerintahan Trump, terhitung sejak masa kampanye serta masa pemerintahannya pada tahun 2016. Penulis novel ini menggunakan karakter pada sebagai bentuk repsresentasi dari pemerintahan Trump, seperti Richard Strickland yang merepresentasikan Donald Trump, beberapa tokoh yang termarjinalkan seperti manusia amfibi, wanita bisu Hispanik, orang dengan ras Afrika-Amerika, dan komunitas LGBTQ yang merepresentasikan beberapa kelompok yang termarjinalkan, yang mendapat tindakan rasis dari Trump selama masa pemerintahannya. Pemilihan latar tempat pada novel juga mewakilkan ketegangan antara kedua negara, yaitu AS dan Rusia. Novel ini juga merepresentasikan dampak dari kebijakan pemerintah yang otoriter untuk mengkritisi pemerintahan Trump terhadap ras dan gender. Dengan mengacu kepada teori representasi, tindakan pemberontakan yang dilakukan oleh kelompok yang termarjinalkan dengan cara melepaskan manusia amfibi menggambarkan beberapa komunitas yang memberontak Trump dan kebijakan yang telah ia buat selama masa pemerintahannya. Kesimpulannya, hasil pembahasan penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa karya sastra dapat menjadi media untuk menyampaikan kritik terhadap pemerintah dan meningkatkan kesadaran akan ketidakadilan manusia serta mempertahankan hak dan kebebasan individu.

The Shape of Water by Guillermo Del Toro and Daniel Kraus raises the issue of the authoritarian government who rejects, oppresses and persecutes the right and voice of the minorities in the US using a library research method. This research discusses the representation of Trump's administration found in the novel and the impact of the authoritarian government policies to the society. The objectives of the study are to find out how the novel represents Trump and marginalized communities in the US and investigate how the novel criticize Trump's administration sentiments on racial and gender. In conducting the research, representation theory is utilized as the theoretical approach. The result indicates that The Shape of Water is a representation of Trump's administration, starting from his campaign and his reign since 2016. The author of the novel uses the character as a figure shown in Trump's administration such as Richard Strickland who represents Donald Trump, and several of marginalized character such as amphibian man, muted Hispanic woman, African-American, LGBTQ communities represents marginalized communities who got a racist treatment by Trump during his administration. Thus, the settings of the story also represent the tension between the two countries, US dan Russia. Also, the novel represents the impact of the authoritarian government policies in order to criticize Trump's administration sentiments on racial and gender. By referring to representation theory, the act of rebellion by releasing the amphibian man held by the marginalized group portrays the communities that rebelled against Trump and the policies he has made during his administration. In conclusion, the discussion of this research paper concludes that the literary work can be a media to conveys criticism to the government, escalating the consciousness to human injustice and maintains individual rights and freedom.
