Yozo's Self-Alienation as Seen in Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human

Penelitian ini menyelidiki masalah pengasingan diri dalam novel Osamu Dazai, No Longer Human. Secara lebih spesifik, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan dan memahami penggambaran pengasingan diri dalam kehidupan Oba Yozo dan perkembangan karakternya melalui jalan cerita novel. Penelitian ini juga mengeksplorasi alasan-alasan munculnya masalah pengasingan diri dalam kehidupan Yozo. Kerangka dari beberapa teori psikologi digunakan untuk melakukan penelitian ini untuk memahami penyajian masalah pengasingan diri dalam kehidupan Oba Yozo sebagai manusia. Isu pengasingan diri yang dihadirkan dalam jalan cerita novel ini terbagi menjadi tiga jenis tindakan; tindakan pengasingan diri secara harfiah, tindakan pengasingan diri yang mengendalikan dan mengatur fisik dan psikis diri, dan tindakan hidup atas ekspektasi orang lain karena kurangnya kepribadian dalam diri. Ketiga jenis tindakan tersebut juga disebabkan oleh tiga aspek; aspek psikologis, persepsi, dan pengaruh sosial. Temuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa masalah pengasingan diri yang terjadi dalam kehidupan Yozo di novel Dazai No Longer Human adalah hasil dari bagaimana psikologi dan persepsinya bekerja bersamaan dengan pengaruh sosial, dan juga merupakan bagian dari proses bagaimana karakternya berubah dalam situasi dan kondisi tertentu.

This research investigates self-alienation issues in Osamu Dazai's novel, No Longer Human. More specifically, this research aims to discover and understand the portrayal of self-alienation in Oba Yozo's life and his character development through the storyline of the novel. This research also explores the reasons for self-alienation issues in Yozo's life. The framework of several psychological theories was used to conduct this research to understand the presentation of the self-alienation issue in Oba Yozo's life as a human being. The issue of self-alienation presented in the storyline of the novel is divided into three types of actions; the literal action of self-estrangement, the action of self-estrangement that control and rule the physic and psychology of oneself, and the action of living up to the expectation of others because the lack of selfhood in oneself. Those three types of action are also caused by three aspects; psychological aspects, perception, and social influences. The main finding of this research is that the issues of self-alienation that happened in Yozo's life in Dazai's No Longer Human are results of how his psychology and perceptions work along with social influences and also a part of the process of how his character changed in a certain situation and condition.
