TYPES AND FUNCTIONS OF DIRTY WORDS IN THE TV SERIES 13 REASONS WHY SEASON 1

Skripsi ini menganalisis kata-kata kotor yang diucapkan oleh para karakter dalam serial TV 13 Reasons Why. Oleh karena itu, tujuan skripsi ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifisikan jenis kata kotor dan fungsi pragmatis dari ucapan para katrakter yang mengandung kata kotor. Data diambil dari ucapan pada dialog percakapan yang dikategorikan sebagai kata kotor dalam serial TV 13 Reasons Why yang kemudian diklasifikasikan ke dalam sepuluh kategori kata kotor menurut Jay (1992). Setelah mengklasifikasikan data menurut tipenya, data kemudian diklasifikasikan berdasarkan fungsi pragmatis menggunakan lima fungsi pragmatis menurut Jay (1992). Kedua teori tersebut berasal dari sumber yang sama, sebuah buku berjudul Cursing in America: A psycholinguistic study of dirty language in the courts, in the movie, in the schoolyards and on the street. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 358 ujaran kata kotor yang diucapkan oleh para karakter dalam serial TV tersebut. Meskipun dalam buku sumber disebutkan bahwa dalam menganalisis jenis kata kotor, satu tuturan dapat memiliki lebih dari satu jenis (cross-categorized), dalam penelitian ini hanya menempatkan satu jenis yang paling potensial dengan melihat keseluruhan kalimat dan konteks ujaran untuk melihat bagaimana kata itu digunakan. Jenis kata kotor yang paling sering digunakan dalam serial TV ini adalah epithet dengan 78 kemunculan (22%). Tipe selanjutnya yang sering digunakan tokoh adalah hinaan dan caci maki dengan frekuensi yang sama dengan obsceniti yaitu 69 kemunculan (19.3%), tipe keempat yang paling banyak digunakan adalah scatologi dengan 58 kemunculan (16%), diikuti oleh profaniti dengan 48 kemunculan (14.3%), diikuti oleh slang dengan 29 kemunculan (8%), diikuti oleh vulgar dengan 7 kemunculan (2%). Selanjutnya, dari 358 data kata kotor, ditemukan bahwa fungsi untuk mengungkapkan kemarahan dan frustrasi adalah yang paling sering digunakan, dengan 153 kemunculan (42.7%), diikuti oleh fungsi deskripsi dan evaluasi dengan 88 kemunculan (24.6%), fungsi untuk menghina adalah fungsi ketiga yang paling banyak digunakan dengan 68 kemunculan (19%), diikuti oleh fungsi pragmatis untuk mengekspresikan keterkejutan dengan 44 kemunculan (12.3%), dan fungsi pragmatis yang paling sedikit digunakan untuk bercanda dengan 5 kemunculan (1.4%).

This undergraduate thesis analyzes dirty words uttered by the characters in the TV series 13 Reasons Why. Therefore, this research aims to analyze and categorize the types of dirty words and their pragmatic functions used by the characters in the TV series entitled 13 Reasons Why Season 1. The data used in this study were utterances in conversational dialogues that are included as dirty words uttered by the characters from episode one to seven. All the data were classified into ten categories of dirty words proposed by Jay (1992). Furthermore, the research data that has been classified based on its type were classified based on the pragmatic function using five pragmatic functions according to Jay (1992). Both theories come from the same source, a book entitled Cursing in America: A psycholinguistic study of dirty language in the courts, in the movies, in the schoolyards and on the streets. The results show that there were 358 dirty words uttered by the characters in the TV series. Although in the source book it is said that in analyzing the type of dirty words, one utterance can have more than one type (called cross categorized), in this research only put one type with the most potential by looking at the entire sentence and the context of the speech to see how the word is used. The most frequently used type of dirty words used in this TV series was epithet with 78 occurrences (22%). The next type that was often used by the characters was insults and slurs type and obscenity type with the same frequency, with 69 occurrences (19.3%), the fourth type which has the most used frequency was scatology type with 58 occurrences (16%), followed by profanity type with 48 occurrences (13.4%), followed by slang type with 29 occurrences (8%), followed by vulgarity with 7 occurrences (2%). Furthermore, from 358 dirty words, it was found that the function to express anger and frustration was the most frequently used, with 153 occurrences (42.7%), followed by descriptive and evaluative function with 88 occurrences (24.6%), the function to insult is the third most used function with 68 occurrences (19%), followed by the pragmatics function to express surprised with 44 occurrences (12.3%), and the least used pragmatics function to joke with 5 occurrences (1.4%).
