MENGURAI SISTEM POLITIK PADA KARYA SASTRA POPULER: ANALISIS PADA TRILOGI THE HUNGER GAMES

Dalam menciptakan latar pada novel, penulis seringkali memasukkan sistem politik tertentu ke dalam karya mereka. Tujuan mereka melakukannya adalah baik untuk mempromosikan sistem politik tersebut maupun memprotesnya. Dalam karya sastra populer modern, ada banyak novel yang memasukkan sistem politik tertentu dengan kedua alasan tadi. Salah satunya adalah trilogi The Hunger Games, yang merupakan serial novel distopia karya penulis Amerika bernama Suzanne Collins. Beberapa penelitian menyatakan bahwa Suzanne Collins menyampaikan pesan politiknya di dalam The Hunger Games dengan memasukkan sistem politik totalitarianisme. Penelitian ini bertujuan memverifikasi argumen tersebut dengan menggunakan teori totalitarianisme Hannah Arendt sebagai landasan teori dan lima kode sistem Roland Barthes sebagai pisau analisis simbol-simbol politik di dalam trilogi. Karena Arendt mengatakan bahwa keberadaan masa dan pemimpin masa adalah syarat pemerintahan totaliter, simbol politik yang akan diteliti adalah masyarakat dan pemimpin politik di dalam The Hunger Games. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa masyarakat dan pemimpin politik di dalam trilogi memang menyimbolkan realitas, tetapi kedua simbol tersebut tidak sesuai dengan karakteristik masa dan pemimpin masa yang dikemukakan Hannah Arendt. Dengan demikian, trilogi The Hunger Games tidak menggambarkan pemerintahan yang totaliter.

In creating the setting for their novels, authors often apply a certain type of political system in their works. The reason why the authors apply a certain type of political system in their works is either to promote the political system or to criticize it. In our modern popular literature, there are a lot of novels that include political systems in their settings for the same reason. One of them is The Hunger Games trilogy, a series of dystopian novels written by an American author named Suzanne Collins. Some research states that Suzanne Collins delivers her political message in The Hunger Games by applying totalitarianism in the story. This research aims to verify the argument by using Hannah Arendt's theory of totalitarianism as the theoretical basis and Roland Barthes' narrative codes as an approach to identify and analyze political symbols in the trilogy. As Arendt argues that the existence of masses and mass leaders are the requirements for a totalitarian government, the political symbols analyzed are the society and the political leader in The Hunger Games. This research reveals that the society and the political leader in the trilogy signify reality, but they do not match Hannah Arendt's characteristics of masses and mass leaders. Therefore, it can be concluded that The Hunger Games does not describe a totalitarian government.
