THE WOUNDED HERO: SEVERUS SNAPE AS A BYRONIC HERO IN J.K. ROWLING HARRY POTTER NOVELS

Penelitian ini membahas karakter Severus Snape dalam series Harry Potter oleh J.K. Rowling. Series Harry Potter adalah novel terkenal yang menceritakan kisah perjalanan Harry Potter dalam mengalahkan Lord Voldemort. Ada beberapa karakter penting dalam series ini, salah satunya adalah Severus Snape. Severus Snape memperlihatkan ciri kepahlawanan yang kebanyakan atau semuanya berlawanan dengan definisi kepahlawanan tradisional, dan dapat dikategorikan sebagai Byronic hero. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk menjabarkan penggambaran Byronic hero melalui karakter Severus Snape serta signifikansinya sebagai Byronic hero pada cerita. Studi ini menggunakan pendekatan kritik sastra baru sebagai satu-satunya pendekatan yang digunakan dalam studi ini. Teori yang digunakan dalam studi ini adalah teori karakter dan karakterisasi serta teori Byronic hero. Dari tujuan studi ini, dapat disimpulkan dua hal. Pertama, Severus Snape adalah representasi dari Byronic hero karena ia memiliki karakteristik Byronic hero; pemberontak atau orang buangan, memiliki masa lalu yang bermasalah, arogan, sangat pintar, dan sinis. Rasa duka yang mendalam akibat kehilangan orang yang ia cintai menjadi motif utamanya dalam membantu dan melindungi Harry Potter. Snape berhasil membantu dan melindungi Harry Potter berkat kemampuannya yang hebat sebagai penyihir dan mampu mengantarkan Harry dalam mengalahkan Lord Voldemort

This research discusses the character of Severus Snape from Harry Potter novels by J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter series is a famous novel about the journey of Harry Potter to defeat Lord Voldemort. There are several key-characters in the series, one of them is Severus Snape. Severus Snape exhibits heroic traits that many of which are partially or even entirely opposed to traditional definitions of heroism, and can be categorized as Byronic hero. The objectives of the study are to analyze the embodiment of Byronic hero through the character of Severus Snape and also his significance as a Byronic hero to the story. This study applies new criticism as the only approach used in this study. The theories used in this study are the theory of character and characterization, also the theory of Byronic hero. From the study it can be concluded that Severus Snape is a portrayal of a Byronic hero because his characteristics fits all the characteristics of Byronic hero; an outlaw or an outcast, has a troubled past, arrogant, highly intelligent, and cynical. A great remorse of losing the love of his life becomes the main motive of him to help and protect Harry Potter. Snape successfully helped and protected Harry Potter with his outstanding abilities as a wizard and is able to lead Harry to defeat Lord Voldemort.
