Ras di Amerika adalah isu yang penting karena melalui sensus yang diadakan setiap sekali dalam sepuluh tahun, pemerintah Amerika mendistribusikan biaya untuk kebutuhan edukasi dan kesehatan dalam sebuah komunitas. Pertanyaan yang penting di setiap sensus adalah ras apa saja yang diakui oleh pemerintah. Selama sejarah sensus di Amerika, di tahun 2000 pemerintah mulai mengakui warga dengan lebih dari satu ras. Namun, di masyarakat warga dengan dua ras tetap dianggap sebagai satu ras saja yang lebih dominan karena bentuk fisiknya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap faktor-faktor dan proses-proses negosiasi dari perkembangan identitas biras Korea-Amerika dalam novel Re Jane karya Patricia Park (2015). Penelitian ini adalah pendekatan pos-nasionalist Amerika dengan teori perkembangan identitas ras ekologi oleh Maria P. P. Root dan negosiasi identitas oleh Stella Ting-Toomey. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif dengan sumber data primer dari novel Re Jane dan sumber data sekunder dari buku, tesis, artrikel, dan sumber online. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah pertama, faktor yang mempengaruhi perkembangan identitas biras Korea-Amerika Jane adalah faktor microlenses yang terdiri dari pengaruh yang diwariskan dan lingkungan sosial seperti keluarga, teman, dan tempat kerja. Kebanyakan dari mereka tidak mengakui Jane bagian komunitas Korea maupun Amerika karena bentuk fisiknya yang campuran. Hal ini membuat Jane merasa tidak diterima sebagai orang Korea dan Amerika. Kedua, untuk meraih rasa kepemilikan dalam komunitasnya, Jane melakukan negosiasi dengan keluarga, teman, dan tempat kerjanya dengan cara mendukung dan menantang standar diri orang sekitarnya agar Jane bisa merasa aman, percaya, dan diterima.

Race in America is an important issue because through the decennial census American government distributes the federal budget to many communities to support their education and health. The important question in every census is the race that the government has acknowledged. Along with the American census history, the government started to acknowledge the people with one or more races in 2000. However, people with more than one race will be classified based on their physical features in society. They will be acknowledged with only one dominant race. This research aims to reveal the factors and the negotiation processes of Korean-American biracial identity development in Re Jane novel by Patricia Park (2015). It is a post-nationalist approach of American studies research that uses the ecological model of racial identity development theory by Maria P. P. Root and identity negotiation theory by Stella Ting-Toomey. The qualitative method is used in this research with primary data sources from the novel and secondary data sources from books, thesis, articles, and online sources. First, the result of this research is that the factors that affect Jane's biracial Korean-American identity development are microlenses factors consisting of inherited influences and social environment. It includes family, friends, and the workplace surrounding Jane. It shows that most of them acknowledge her as the other who does not belong to both Korean and American communities because of her mixed-race physical features. Thus, it makes Jane unaccepted both as Korean and American. Second, to have a sense of belonging in the community, she negotiates with her family, friends, and workplace by supporting and challenging others' desired self-image. Thus she can feel secure, trusted, and accepted.
