The Impact of Container Trade on Local Economy

Perdagangan internasional telah berkembang dari tahun 1956 hingga 1981 sebagai akibat dari munculnya containerization. Selain itu, ekonomi masyarakat lokal di sekitar pelabuhan peti kemas telah tumbuh secara signifikan. Kami telah melakukan studi pertama menggunakan Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) untuk menguji dampak containerisasi terhadap ekonomi lokal. Intensitas cahaya malam telah digunakan sebagai proxy untuk ekonomi lokal. Kami telah memutuskan kedalaman awal pelabuhan sebagai variabel berjalan, dan pengacakan telah dicapai melalui nilai batas, yang merupakan draft minimum kapal Post-Panamax yang beroperasi pada tahun 1985. Pada jeda dua hingga sepuluh tahun, volume perdagangan peti kemas berdampak positif dan signifikan terhadap wilayah hingga 111 kilometer dari pelabuhan pada level 1%.

International trade has expanded from 1956 to 1981 as a result of the advent of containerization. Additionally, the local economies of communities next to container ports have grown significantly. We have conducted the first study using Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) to examine the impacts of containerization on the local economy. The intensity of nightlight has been used as a proxy for the local economy. We have decided the port's initial depth as a running variable, and randomization has been accomplished via a cutoff value, which was the minimum draft of a post-Panamax ship operating in 1985. On a two- to ten-year lag, container trade volume has a positive and significant impact on the region up to 111 kilometres from the port at a 1% level.
