Tesis ini menguji kelayakan istilah relawan yang tersemat pada relawan kolom kosong Makassar. Menempatkan relawan kolom kosong sebagai perwujudan voluntarisme politik, tesis ini menganalisis motivasi pembentukan serta pengorganisasian komunitas guna memperoleh gambaran umum apakah aktivitas serupa dapat dikategorikan sebagai perwujudan voluntarisme atau sebuah upaya mewujudkan kepentingan politis lain. Temuan menunjukkan voluntarisme hanya menjadi metode bagi komunitas, sementara substansi dalam aktivitas nirpamrih tersebut justru sarat akan unsur protes politik. Ekspresi voluntarisme terlihat melalui aktivitas yang didasarkan atas kesukarelaan tanpa paksaan, tidak bertujuan memperoleh materi, struktur kelembagaan yang cair, serta ruang gerak yang sporadis. Sementara unsur protes politik ditunjukkan melalui motivasi yang melatarbelakangi pembentukan komunitas relawan, proses pengorganisasian kelembagaan, hingga narasi kampanye. Komunitas relawan terbentuk atas adanya afeksi yang terjalin dengan kandidat terdiskualifikasi dan memunculkan gelombang protes atas diskualifikasi tersebut. Di sisi lain relawan kolom kosong juga menunjukkan upaya protes politik terhadap persaingan prapemilihan dalam tubuh partai politik yang tidak sehat. Istilah relawan yang tersemat pada relawan kolom kosong menjadi dilematis mengingat di satu sisi komunitas tersebut memang merepresentasikan nilai-nilai kesukarelaan, namun di sisi lain motif politis juga sangat mendominasi setiap aktivitas. Relawan kolom kosong bukan sekadar wadah untuk mewujudkan kepentingan publik melainkan kendaraan alternatif bagi para aktor untuk mewujudkan kepentingan politis masing-masing.

This thesis aims to test the feasibility of the term volunteer attached to the blank box volunteers in Makassar. Placing blank box volunteers as an embodiment of political volunteerism, this thesis focuses on analyzing the motivations of forming and organizing communities to obtain a general idea of whether similar activities can be categorized as volunteerism or the attempts to pursue other political interests. The finding shows volunteerism only became a method of volunteer communities, while the substance was full of political protest. The expression of volunteerism is seen through activities that are based on the actor's free will, no material reward, fluid organizational structure, and sporadic movement. Meanwhile, the political protest was manifested through the motivation behind the community formation, the organizing of the community, and the campaign narratives. The blank box volunteer communities were formed based on the affection between volunteers and a disqualified candidate, which raises protests over the disqualification. The other communities show the political protest against the pre-election competition, a candidacy held by political parties. The term volunteer embedded in these blank box volunteer communities becomes a dilemma. On one side these communities represent volunteerism values, but on the other side express very dominant political protest motives. The communities do not manifest public interest or social welfare but an alternative vehicle for actors to aim their respective political interests.
