The Relationship Between Peer Social Support and Academic Stress Among University Students During the Pandemic COVID-19

Beberapa penelitian terdahulu menemukan bahwa dukungan sosial teman sebaya berperan dalam membantu mahasiswa mengatasi stres akademik yang mereka alami. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari hubungan antara dukungan sosial teman sebaya dan stres akademik pada mahasiswa selama perubahan lingkungan belajar. Skala Dukungan Sosial Teman Sebaya (α = 0,91) dan Skala Stres Akademik (α = 0,95) digunakan untuk mengambil data dalam penelitian ini. Terdapat total 230 mahasiswa dari empat belas perguruan tinggi di Yogyakarta yang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian. Partisipan adalah mahasiswa aktif yang sedang atau pernah mengikuti perkuliahan selama transisi proses belajar dari pembelajaran tatap muka ke pembelajaran virtual akibat pembatasan sosial saat pandemi. Analisis regresi linear sederhana digunakan untuk mencapai tujuan dari penelitian ini. Hasil analisis menunjukkan adanya hubungan negatif yang signifikan antara dukungan sosial teman sebaya dan stres akademik (r= -0,243; p < 0,05). Dukungan sosial teman sebaya diketahui memberikan sumbangan efektif sebesar 5,9% terhadap stres akademik. Penelitian ini juga mendiskusikan saran yang diharapkan dapat berguna untuk mahasiswa, dosen, dan institusi pendidikan.
The sudden transition of the learning environment during the coronavirus outbreak brings many challenges for university students. It potentially led them to experience academic stress. Various studies have found that peer social support is beneficial to help students deal with academic stress. Therefore, the current study aimed to find the relationship between peer social support and academic stress among university students during the transition of learning environment. Peer Social Support Scale (α = 0,91) and Academic Stress Scale (α = 0,95) were used as instruments for the data collection. A total of 230 undergraduate students from fourteen universities located in Yogyakarta participated in the study. The participants were students who were currently or had attended lecture(s) in the time of learning transformation from physical to virtual environment due to social restriction. A simple linear regression technique was applied in order to reach the objective. Results showed a negative significant correlation between peer social support and academic stress (r = -0,243; p < 0,05). Peer social support was found to predict the 5,9% variation of academic stress. Further suggestions for students, educational practitioners, and educational institutions were also discussed in this study.
