Phatic Expressions in the "Riverdale" TV Series Season 1

Penelitian ini mendiskusikan ekspresi fatik dalam serial TV Riverdale Season 1. Penelitian ini fokus pada klasifikasi dan analisis tipe fungsi dari ekspresi fatik keenam tokoh utama saat mereka membahas topik kematian Jason Blossom. Analisis dan pengklasifikasin ini menggunakan teori Jumanto (2017) yaitu breaking the silence, starting a conversation, making small talk, gossiping, keeping the talk, expressing solidarity, creating harmony, offering comfort, expressing empathy, expressing friendship, expressing respect, and expressing politeness. Hasilnya menunjukan ada 195 data dalam semua tipe fungsi dari ekspresi fatik yang di temukan dalam ketiga belas episode TV series ini. Keeping the talk adalah fungsi fatik yang paling sering digunakan oleh keenam tokoh utama dengan 61 data karena para tokoh ingin mempertahankan percakapan untuk mendapatkan informasi tentang kematian Jason Blossom. Kemudian diikuti oleh gossiping dengan 58 data. Hal ini terjadi karena mereka banyak melakukan gosip ketika menuduh beberapa orang sebagai pelaku pembunuhan Jason. Penelitian ini juga mengklasifikasikan tipe respon dan menganalisa apakah respon mereka terhadap ekspresi fatik tersebut dapat membuat percakapan berhenti atau berlanjut. Ketika percakapan berlanjut, para tokoh utama bisa mendapatkan informasi tentang kasus kematian Jason Blossom dan bahkan pembunuhnya.

This research discusses phatic expressions in the Riverdale TV Series Season 1. The analysis and the classification of the function of the phatic expressions related to the death of Jason Blossom produced by the six main characters are the focus of this research. The analysis and the classification apply the theory proposed by Jumanto (2017), namely breaking the silence, starting a conversation, making small talk, gossiping, keeping the talk, expressing solidarity, creating harmony, offering comfort, expressing empathy, expressing friendship, expressing respect and expressing politeness. The result shows 195 data are found in all function types of phatic expressions in the thirteen episodes of this TV series. Keeping the talk is the most used by the six main characters with 61 data because the characters want to maintain the conversation to get information about the death of Jason Blossom. It is followed by gossiping with 58 data. It happens because they make a lot of gossips accusing some people as the killer of Jason Blossom. This research also classified the response type and analyzed whether their responses to those phatic expressions can make the conversations stop or continue. When the conversations can be continued and maintained, the characters could get more information about the death of Jason Blossoms and even murderer.
