CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBIALS USED IN ENGLISH RESEARCH ARTICLES AND POPULAR SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES

Adverbial konjungtif merupakan salah satu perangkat kohesif yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan ide antar kalimat. Penelitian ini mengkaji penggunaan adverbial konjungtif dalam artikel penelitian dan artikel ilmiah populer untuk mengetahui bentuk, posisi dalam kalimat, dan fungsi kohesif dari Adverbial konjungtif yang digunakan. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif dengan perhitungan data kuantitatif. Korpus Linguistik diterapkan sebagai pendekatan penelitian. Sumber data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah 10 artikel penelitian berbahasa Inggris dari Journal Development and Environment (JDE) dan 102 artikel ilmiah populer dari National Geography. Proses analisis menggunakan klasifikasi adverbial konjungtif yang diusulkan oleh Biber (1999), posisi dalam kalimat yang diusulkan oleh Quirk (1985) dan fungsi kohesif yang diusulkan oleh Halliday dan Hasan (1976). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adverbial konjungtif berbeda secara signifikan di kedua subkorpora. Artikel penelitian lebih sering menggunakan adverbial konjungtif daripada artikel ilmiah populer di bidang pembangunan dan lingkungan. Namun, persentase penggunaan setiap adverbial konjungtif di setiap subkorpora hampir sama. Bentuk utama dari adverbial konjungtif adalah adverbial konjungtif sederhana, diikuti oleh frasa adverbial konjungtif dan klausa adverbial konjungtif. Pada umumnya adverbial konjungtif menempati posisi awal kalimat, diikuti oleh posisi tengah dan posisi akhir. Sebagian besar adverbial konjungtif memiliki fungsi aditif, temporal, adversatif dan kausal. Penelitian ini menyarankan bahwa penggunaan adverbial konjungtif dalam kedua jenis tulisan ini sangat penting untuk membantu pembaca menafsirkan ide bacaan, terutama artikel populer yang memiliki cakupan pembaca yang lebih luas dengan berbagai kepentingan yang berbeda.

Conjunctive adverbials are one of the cohesive devices that are used to connect the idea between sentences. This research investigates the use of conjunctive adverbials in research articles and popular scientific articles to find out the forms, the sentential positions, and the cohesive functions of the used conjunctive adverbials. This study is descriptive qualitative with quantitative data calculation. Corpus linguistic is implemented as the approach of the study. The data sources used in this research are 10 English research articles from Journal Development and Environment (JDE) and 102 popular scientific articles from National Geography. The analysis processes use the adverbial classifications proposed by Biber (1999), and the sentential positions proposed by Quirk (1985), and the cohesive functions proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). Results show that conjunctive adverbials are significantly different in both subcorpora. Research article uses conjunctive adverbials more frequently than popular scientific articles in the field of development and environment. However, the percentage uses of each conjunctive adverbials in each subcorpora are similar. The predominant forms of conjunctive adverbials are simple conjunctive adverbials, followed by phrasal dan clausal conjunctive adverbials. They occupy predominantly in initial positions, followed by the medial position and end position. They mostly have the function of additive, temporal, adversative, and causal. Shortly, this research suggests that the use of conjunctive adverbials in the two types of writing are essentially important to help the readers interpret the idea of the articles, especially popular articles that have a wider scope of readers from different interests.
