N-word in Black Stand-Up Comedy: A Linguistic Reclamation

Komedi stand-up adalah jenis pertunjukan komedi populer di mana komedian membawakan sandiwara di depan penonton secara langsung, menceritakan lelucon tentang berbagai topik. Di Amerika Serikat, komunitas komedi stand-up terdiri dari pelawak dari berbagai suku dan ras, salah satunya adalah African-American atau orang kulit hitam. Berfokus pada orang kulit hitam sebagai komedian, penggunaan n-word di antara mereka nampak mencolok selama bertahun-tahun belakangan. Meski biasa digunakan sebagai cercaan, n-word menjadi perbincangan yang menarik, karena fungsinya dalam komedi stand-up tidak selalu untuk menghina ketika diucapkan oleh komedian kulit hitam. Dalam penelitian ini, fungsi dari n-word yang digunakan oleh komedian kulit hitam dalam komedi stand-up diselidiki. Selain itu, kaitannya dengan reklamasi linguistik juga menjadi bahan diskusi. Data diperoleh dari kanal YouTube bernama Laugh Factory, khusus berupa video-video komedian kulit hitam yang ditayangkan pada tahun 2020. Analisis fungsi dilakukan dengan mengkategorikan fungsi n-word sebelum menggunakan Model SPEAKING (Hymes 1967), dengan fokus pada aspek ends (E) atau tujuan. Untuk mengaitkan fungsi n-word dengan reklamasi linguistik, dilakukan analisis kualitatif dengan menggunakan Illocutionary Force Indicator Account (Liu 2020) untuk melihat apakah n-word berhasil atau gagal berfungsi sebagai cercaan. Hasilnya, meskipun beberapa kemunculan n-word memiliki fungsi untuk menghina, tujuan pengucapannya sebenarnya bukan sebagai hinaan. Selain itu, ditemukan bahwa n-word yang digunakan oleh komedian kulit hitam dalam komedi stand-up gagal berfungsi sebagai hinaan, yang membuktikan bahwa ada proses reklamasi linguistik dengan n-word yang digunakan tidak untuk menghina.

Stand-up comedy is a popular type of comedy performance where comics deliver a skit in front of a live audience, telling jokes about various topics. In the United States of America, the stand-up comedy community consists of comics from a diverse range of ethnicities and races, one of them being African American or black people. Specifying on black people as comics, the use of the n-word is prominent among them throughout the years. Although commonly used as a slur, the n-word becomes an interesting discussion, as its function within stand-up comedy is not solely derogatory, when uttered by black comics. In this research, the functions of the n-word used by black comics in stand-up comedy are investigated. Moreover, its relation to linguistic reclamation also becomes matters of discussion. The data were obtained from a YouTube channel named Laugh Factory, specifically in the form of videos by black comics aired in 2020. The analysis for the functions was conducted by categorizing the functions of the n-word, following the application of Hymes' (1967) SPEAKING model, focusing on the end (E) aspect of the model. In order to relate the functions of the n-word with linguistic reclamation, a qualitative analysis was conducted by using Illocutionary Force Indicator Account (Liu 2020) to see whether the n-word succeeds or fails to function as a slur. As a result, despite some of the occurrences of the n-word having derogatory functions, the ends of uttering them are not actually as a slur. Moreover, it is discovered that the n-word used by black comics in stand-up comedy fail to function as a slur, proving that there is a process of linguistic reclamation with the n-word being non derogatory.
