Satire in Hart and Kaufman's :: You can't take it with you

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan aspek-aspek satiris dalam drama You Can't Take It With You yang ditulis oleh George S. Kaufmsln dan Moss Hart. Disamping itu, penelitian ini juga bermaksud untuk mengungkap fenomena sosial terefleksi dari satir tersebut. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan melalui studi pustaka yang rnemfokuskan pada sumber-sunber referensi yang berkaitan dengan topik yang dibicarakan. Penelitian dengan sudut pandang Kaj ian Amerika ini menggunakan pendekatan interdisipliner. Mimesis sebagai salah satu pendekatan sastra juga diterapkan dalarn penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa aspek satir ealarn drama itu terletak pada permasalahan yang melibatkan pemerintah dan masyarakat. Dari satir tersebut terefleksi bahwa pemerintah melalui Internal Revenue Department dan Department of J u s t i c e , dengan kebi jakan dan tindakannya, belum dapat memecahkan permasalahan di era Great Depression. Hal ini menyebabkan keraguan masyarakat 'akan kemampuan pemerintah. Satir itu juga merefleksikan fenomena masyarakat yang mempertanyakan materialisme yang menjadi tren pada era sebelum depresi.

This research attempts to tind the satirical aspect in the play You can't take it With You written by George S. Kaufman and MOSS Hart. It also aims at revealing the social phenomena refiected in the satire. This study is undertaken through a library research, focusing on bibliographical sources related to the topic discussed. This research is under knerican Studies perspective applying interdisciplinary approach. Mimetic as one of literary approaches is also employed. The result of this research shows that the satirical aspects in the play lie on the problems involving government and society. From the satire it is reflected that the government through the Internal Revenue Department and Department of Justice, with its policies and actions, has not successfully solved the problems in the Great Depression. Such a condition brings about social doubt towards government's 'capability. The satire also reflects the social phenomena' questioning materialism that became the social trend prior to the depression.
