The Role of Adult Attachment Dimensions on the Motives to Use Dating Applications in Indonesian Young Adults

Orientasi gaya kelekatan seseorang diyakini untuk mempengaruhi kondisi hubungan dekat di masa dewasa, dimana kondisi tersebut berdasar pada hubungan antar pengasuh (caregiver) dan anak di masa bayi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana dimensi-dimensi gaya kelekatan pada orang dewasa memprediksi motif penggunaan aplikasi kencan, karena aplikasi-aplikasi ini semakin populer dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, khususnya di Indonesia. Data dikumpulkan dari 207 pengguna berbagai aplikasi kencan, berusia 18 hingga 35 tahun, dan berdomisili di pulau Jawa. Responden menyelesaikan Revised Adult Attachment Scale - Close Relationships Version (RAAS-CRV) dan Tinder Motives Scale (TMS) yang telah disesuaikan dan diadaptasi ke bahasa Indonesia. Analisis regresi berganda menemukan bahwa dimensi 'Close' (nyaman dengan kedekatan) memprediksi motif Jalan-Jalan dan Bersosialisasi, dimensi 'Depend' (nyaman dalam bergantung pada orang lain) memprediksi motif penggunaan aplikasi kencan untuk Mencari Hubungan, sedangkan dimensi 'Anxiety'(takut ditolak atau takut tidak dicintai) secara positif memprediksi motif yang sama dengan 'Depend', dengan tambahan motif Distraksi/Selingan dan Persetujuan Sosial; Nilai R2 yang telah disesuaikan (Adjusted R2) menunjukkan bahwa dimensi-dimensi gaya kelekatan hanya memprediksi motif sampai tingkat sedang. Penelitian di masa depan sebaiknya berfokus pada menentukan moderator atau variabel lain yang mempengaruhi motif penggunaan aplikasi kencan.

Attachment orientation is believed to affect the condition of close relationships in adulthood, derived from the caregiver-child relationship in infancy. This study aims to investigate the extent to which adult attachment dimensions predict the motives to use dating applications, as these applications have been on the rise of popularity in recent years, specifically in Indonesia. Data was collected from 207 users of various dating applications, aged 18 to 35, and domiciled in Java island. Respondents completed the Revised Adult Attachment Scale - Close Relationships Version (RAAS-CRV) and the Tinder Motives Scale (TMS) that was adapted to Indonesian. Multiple regression analysis found that the 'Close' dimension (comfortable with intimacy) predicted motives of Travel and Socializing, 'Depend' dimension (being at ease relying on others) predicted the motive of using dating applications for Relationship Seeking, while the 'Anxiety' dimension (fear of rejection or being unloved) positively predicted the same motive, with the addition of Distraction and Social Approval; Adjusted R2 suggests that the dimensions only predicted the motives to a moderate extent. Future research is encouraged to determine moderators or other variables that influence the motives of dating application usage.
