Impoliteness in Donald Trump's Tweets

Donald Trump merupakan salah satu politisi terkemuka yang aktif menggunakan media sosial terutama Twitter. Melalui akun Twitter pribadinya, Trump menggunakan situs tersebut sebagai wadah komunikasi yang dianggap penting antara Trump dengan seluruh dunia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari realisasi ketidaksantunan dari 351 twit yang diambil dari akun Twitter pribadi Donald Trump sejak debat pemilihan umum pertama sampai Hari Pemilihan presiden Amerika Serikat tahun 2020. Penelitian ini menggunakan kerangka ketidaksantunan Bousfield (2008) untuk mengidentifikasi strategi ketidaksantunan dalam twit tersebut. Secara keseluruhan, terdapat 568 kejadian dari sebelas strategi ketidaksantunan yang teridentifikasi dari 351 twit. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ketidaksantunan tercermin dalam twit Donald Trump. Selain itu, ketidaksantunan memainkan peranan yang cukup mendasar dalam twit Donald Trump, yaitu sebagai sarana kampanye politik mengingat bahwa twit tersebut dibuat selama periode terpenting dalam pemilihan presiden Amerika Serikat tahun 2020.

Donald Trump was among the most prominent politicians who actively engaged himself in social media, especially Twitter. Using his personal Twitter account, Trump utilized the platform as an important means of communication between him and the rest of the world. This undergraduate thesis aims at investigating the realizations of impoliteness in 351 tweets taken from Donald Trump's personal Twitter account from the first general election debate to the Election Day of the 2020 United States presidential election. Bousfield's (2008) impoliteness framework was furthermore employed to identify and classify the impoliteness strategies realized in the tweets. Overall, there are 568 occurrences of eleven impoliteness strategies observed across 351 tweets. The results indicate that impoliteness was apparent in Donald Trump's tweets. In addition, impoliteness plays a considerably fundamental role in Donald Trump's tweets, that is, as a means of political campaign, considering the fact that they were posted during the most important period within the 2020 United States presidential election.
