PEREMPUAN SEBAGAI PENGGERAK EKONOMI DI ABAD KE-16 DALAM SEKUEL NOVEL WILDWOOD DANCING DAN CYBELE'S SECRET KARYA JULIET MARILLIER

Dunia kesusastraan telah melahirkan karya yang mengangkat isu-isu yang terjadi di dalam masyarakat, seperti penggambaran perempuan yang lekat dengan ranah domestik. Penulis yang mengangkat topik tersebut adalah Juliet Marillier, penulis yang berasal dari New Zealand. Marillier dikenal sebagai penulis fiksi historis yang sering memilih tokoh perempuan. Salah satu karyanya yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Wildwood Dancing dan Cybele's Secret yang berlatar waktu di abad ke-16. Sekuel ini menceritakan partisipasi perempuan di luar ranah domestik, khususnya dalam aspek ekonomi. Kedua tokoh utama dari novel ini berusaha untuk membuktikan kompetensi mereka sebagai pedagang perempuan di tengah dominasi laki-laki. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori ekonomi politik feminis Jacqui True, yang menggarisbawahi bahwa globalisasi ekonomi sejatinya seperti pedang bermata dua; yakni dapat mendukung perempuan untuk mandiri secara finansial, dan di sisi lain dapat merugikan perempuan. Perempuan yang keluar dari ranah domestik di abad ke-16 mendapat stigma negatif dan kurang diapresiasi. Metode yang digunakan dalam studi ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif Hasil dari studi ini adalah pertama partisipasi perempuan dalam kedua novel ini adalah dengan menjadi pedagang dan menjalankan misi untuk keluar dari krisis ekonomi yang melanda. Kedua, strategi-strategi yang diterapkan antara lain membatasi pengeluaran rumah tangga, membuat catatan keuangan, dan berpartisipasi langsung dalam pertemuan dagang. Ketiga, penggambaran partisipasi perempuan diperlukan sebagai sebuah representasi perjuangan kesetaraan perempuan di ranah publik yang perlu diapresiasi.

The world of literature has produced works that raise issues that occur in society, such as depicting women who are closely related to the domestic sphere. The writer who brings up the topic is Juliet Marillier, a writer from New Zealand. Marillier is known as a historical fiction writer who often chooses female characters. One of her works used in this research is Wildwood Dancing and Cybele's Secret, set in the 16th century. This sequel tells about women's participation outside the domestic sphere, especially in the economic aspect. The two main characters of this novel try to prove their competence as female traders amid male domination. This research uses Jacqui True's feminist political economy theory, which underlines that economic globalization is actually like a double-edged sword; that is, it can support women to become financially independent and, on the other hand, can harm women. Women who left the domestic sphere in the 16th century received negative stigmas and were underappreciated. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. Firstly, the results of this study are that women's participation in these two novels is to become traders and carry out a mission to get out of the economic crisis that hit. Second, the strategies implemented include limiting household expenses, keeping financial records, and participating directly in trade meetings. Third, the depiction of women's participation is needed to represent the struggle for women's equality in the public sphere that needs to be appreciated.
