Tesis ini menelaah strategi dan fungsi wacana humor dalam serial komedi situasi Mind Your Language. Wacana humor pada serial komedi tersebut menarik untuk diteliti karena menghadirkan humor yang fenomenal sekaligus kontroversial. Beberapa wacana humor yang dilibatkan dalam proses kreasi humor teridentifikasi sebagai realisasi konsep humor etnik yang cenderung rasialis dan sangat berpotensi memicu terjadinya konflik. Originalitas dan stereotipe berbagai negara yang terlibat dalam komedi tersebut juga dimunculkan sebagai muatan materi untuk menciptakan humor. Tesis ini berupaya membedah konsep humor dari sudut pandang aspek pragmatik, aspek kebahasaan, dan fungsi humor. Data kebahasaan yang ditemukan pada skrip komedi yang telah disesuaikan dengan tuturan pada audio visual menunjukkan variasi proses penciptaan humor yang beragam. Secara pragmatik, temuan pada telaah ini menunjukkan bahwa penyimpangan prinsip kerjasama dan prinsip kesantunan dalam percakapan dimanfaatkan untuk menghadirkan kelucuan. Penutur menyimpangkan maksim kualitas, maksim kuantitas, maksim relevansi, dan maksim pelaksanaan dalam prinsip kerjasama, serta maksim kebijaksanaan, maksim kedemawanan, maksim penerimaan, maksim kerendahan hati, maksim kesetujuan, dan maksim kesimpatian dalam prinsip kesantunan untuk menimbulkan kelucuan. Selain aspek pragmatik, wacana humor dalam komedi tersebut juga memanfaatkan aspek-aspek kebahasaan yang disimpangkan. Aspek kebahasaan yang disimpangkan sebagai proses kreasi humor adalah substitusi bunyi, penambahan bunyi, pelesapan bunyi, persesuaian bunyi, pasangan minimal, metatesis, akronim, frasa verba, pemarkah kala, kata majemuk, eponim, homonimi, homofoni, polisemi, pemaduan makna pergeseran pemakaian, makna literal dan makna figuratif, hiponimi, sinonimi, makna asosiatif, idiom, klausa syarat, klausa sebab, analogi, implikatur, ironi, satire, sarkasme, metafora, hiperbola, repetisi, tabu bahasa, nama, deksis persona, kalimat tanya, dan slang berima. Secara kontekstual, pemanfaatan aspek pragmatik maupun aspek kebahasaan untuk mengkreasikan humor dapat menghasilkan fungsi humor yang beragam. Fungsi wacana humor dalam komedi tersebut diidentifikasi dan diklasifikasi berdasarakan tiga fungsi utama humor menurut Hay, yakni solidaritas, kekuatan, dan psikologi. Humor untuk menggoda, untuk menyindir, untuk melindungi, dan untuk memprotes dimanfaatkan untuk mengekspresikan fungsi solidaritas. Fungsi kekuatan diekspresikan melalui humor untuk membangun konflik, untuk mengancam, untuk merugikan lawan tutur, untuk menunjukkan ketidaksetujuan, dan untuk menyalahkan. Selain mengekspresikan fungsi solidaritas dan fungsi kekuatan, fungsi psikologi juga ditemukan dalam serial komedi tersebut dengan humor untuk memperoleh keuntungan, untuk melindungi diri, untuk menghibur, untuk menyombongkan diri, untuk menunjukkan ketidaksukaan terhadap lawan tutur, dan humor untuk menakuti. Konteks situasi tuturan menjadi satu hal yang sangat menentukan dalam proses identifikasi fungsi humor. Humor yang sama berpotensi merepresentasikan fungsi utama humor yang berbeda apabila diproduksi dalam konteks tuturan yang berbeda.

This thesis examines the strategies and functions of humorous discourse in Mind Your Language situation comedy. Humorous discourse in that sitcoms is interesting to be observed because that comedy presents phenomenal and controversial humor as well. The most concept of humorous discourse involved in that situation comedy is identified as the realization of the concept of ethnic humor which tends to be racist and potentially trigger conflict. Originality and stereotypes of various countries involved in that sitcoms are promoted as material content in humor creation. This thesis analyzes humor creation from the pragmatic aspects, linguistic aspects, and the functions of humor. The data found in comedy scripts that have been adapted to audio-visual speech shows the various processes of humor creation by utilizing linguistic manipulation. Pragmatically, the findings demonstrate that deviations of cooperative principle and politeness principle in conversation are employed to create humor. Speakers break the rule of maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner in the cooperative principle, as well as tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim in politeness principle to elicit humor. Besides pragmatic aspect, humorous discourse in Mind Your Language situation comedy manipulates linguistic aspects. Linguistic aspects distorted as a humor creation process are sound substitution, sound addition, sound omission, sound compatibility, minimal pairs, metathesis, acronyms, verb phrases, tense markers, compound words, eponyms, homonymy, homophony, polysemy, meaning integration in shifting usage, literal and figurative meanings, hyponymy, synonymy, associative meaning, idioms, conditional clauses, cause clauses, analogies, implicature, irony, satire, sarcasm, metaphors, hyperbole, repetition, language taboos, names, persona deixis, interrogative sentence, and rhyming slang. Contextually, involving pragmatic and linguistic aspects in humorous discourse are able to produce various humor functions. The functions of humor in that sitcoms are identified and classified according to Hay's three main functions of humor namely solidarity, strength, and psychology function. Humorous functions to tease, to insinuate, to protect, and to protest are utilized to express solidarity function. The power function is produced to express humorous utterances to build conflict, to threaten, to harm the interlocutor, to show disagreement, and to blame another. Apart from expressing solidarity and power function, psychological functions are also found in that situation comedy to express speaker's effort to gain advantages, to protect oneself, to entertain, to boast, to show speaker's dislike to interlocuter, and humor to scare interlocuter off. The context of situation is highly decisive in the process of identifying the function of humorous discourse. Similar humor function has potentiality to represent different main functions of humor if they are produced in different contexts.
