LIFE OF POOR IRISH IMMIGRANTS REFLECTED IN STEPHEN CRANE'S MAGGIE: A GIRL OF THE STREET

2021 | Skripsi | S1 SASTRA INGGRISPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji kehidupan miskin imigran Irlandia di Amerika Serikat pada abad ke 19 yang tercermin dalam karya Stephen Crane Maggie: A Girl of the Street. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan Sosiologis, penelitian ini melihat hubungan antara kehidupan tokoh-tokoh dalam novel dengan latar sosial dalam novel. Melalui kajian setting dan penokohan dalam novel beserta sejarah imigran Irlandia di Amerika Serikat, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa, pada abab ke 19, banyak masyarakat miskin Irlandia yang pindah ke Amerika Serikat karena mereka menderita kelaparan kentang yang parah. Mereka pindah ke Amerika Serikat dengan harapan kehidupan yang lebih baik. Isu-isu stereotip dari masyarakat miskin Irlandia ini tercermin dalam novel melalui bahasa vulgar yang disebut Irish English, alkoholisme, kekerasan, dan juga prostitusi.
This research aims at examining the life of poor Irish immigrants in the 19th century United States of America which is reflected in Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl of the Street. Using a sociological approach, this research looks at the relationship between the lives of the characters in the novel and the social background of the novel. Through the study of setting and characterization in the novel as well as the history of Irish immigrants in the United States of America, this research finds that, in the 19th century, a lot of poor Irish people moved to the United States because they suffered terrible potato famine. They moved to the United States in the hope of a better life. The stereotypical issues of the poor Irish immigrants lives are reflected in the novel through the vulgar language called Irish-English, alcoholism, violence, and also prostitution.
