MELAMPAUI DOMINASI MASKULINITAS HEGEMONIK MELALUI TOKOH SUPERHERO GAY DAN PESAN QUEER DALAM NOVEL HERO KARYA PERRY MOORE

Sosok superhero umumnya dianggap sebagai sosok ideal sehingga seringkali dijadikan sebagai role model bagi banyak orang. Citra superhero yang ditampilkan oleh media adalah citra laki-laki dengan maskulinitas hegemonik. Laki-laki maskulinitas hegemonik dikategorikan sebagai lelaki heteroseksual, kuat, cerdas, dan dominan. Sementara itu, laki-laki homoseksual dikategorikan sebagai maskulin subordinat karena dianggap lekat dengan sifat feminin. Novel Hero karya Perry Moore menghadirkan sosok seorang superhero gay. Penelitian ini berjudul "Melampaui Dominasi Maskulinitas Hegemonik Melalui Tokoh Superhero Gay dan Pesan Queer dalam Novel Hero Karya Perry Moore". Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menjelaskan bagaimana tokoh superhero gay bernama Thom mampu melampaui dominasi maskulinitas hegemonik yang selama ini identik dengan citra superhero. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif-analisis. Istilah maskulinitas hegemonik sendiri adalah istilah yang dipopulerkan oleh R.W. Connell. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini akan memanfaatkan konsep maskulinitas hegemonik sebagai landasan teori. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menjelaskan mengenai pesan queer yang ingin disampaikan oleh Perry Moore sebagai seorang gay juga. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tokoh Thom dikategorikan sebagai maskulinitas subordinat karena orientasi seksualnya dan juga sifatnya yang lemah, tidak percaya diri, dan insecure. Sebagai superhero gay, Thom menghadapi beberapa konflik yang diterimanya di ruang akademik, keluarga, maupun lingkungan tempat tinggal. Akan tetapi, ia menunjukkan bahwa dirinya yang dikategorikan sebagai maskulin subordinat mampu mengubah persepsi penduduk setempat. Selain itu, melalui novel ini pula Perry Moore mencoba untuk membongkar stereotip superhero dengan pesan pemberdayaan bagi kaum LGBT muda.

Generally, superheroes are considered the ideal figure so they become role models for many people. The superhero image shown by the media is a male image with hegemonic masculinity. Men with hegemonic masculinity are categorized as heterosexual, strong, intelligent, and dominant men. Meanwhile, homosexual men categorized as subordinate masculinity because assimilated to femininity. Hero by Perry Moore presents a gay superhero character. This study entitled "Exceed The Domination Of Hegemonic Masculinity Through Superhero Gay Character and The Queer Messages in Perry Moore's Novel Hero". This study aims to explain the contestation experienced by the gay superhero character named Thom to the hegemonic masculinity which is often identified as the superhero image. The method used in this study is descriptive-analytic. The hegemonic masculinity term itself is a term which was popularized by R.W. Connell. Therefore, this study will apply the hegemonic masculinity concept to be a theoretical basis. Furthermore, this study also explains the queer message which Perry Moore delivered as a gay himself. The result of this study shows that Thom is categorized as subordinate masculinity for his sexual orientation and his personality as weak, unconfident, and insecure. As a gay superhero, Thom faced some conflicts in the academic sector, family, and neighborhood. However, he showed that as subordinate masculinity he could change people's perspective. Other than that, Perry Moore tried to disassemble the image of the superhero with the message to empower youth especially for LGBT youth by this novel.
