Analisis Wacana Kritis Meritokrasi Pendidikan Korea Selatan dalam Serial Drama SKY Castle

Meritokrasi pendidikan, sebuah sistem di mana upaya dan kompetensi dicerminkan melalui pencapaian pendidikan. Namun meski demikian, realitanya masih terdapat faktor-faktor lain yang berpengaruh pada peluang seseorang untuk sukses, yang menyebabkan persaingan meritokratis dimulai dari posisi awal yang tidak setara. Berkaitan dengan kondisi tersebut, penelitian ini berupaya membongkar elemen-elemen meritokrasi pendidikan Korea Selatan dalam serial drama SKY Castle. Penelitian ini menggunakan Analisis Wacana Kritis milik Norman Fairclough yang terdiri atas tiga level analisis (konstruksi teks, interpretasi penonton, praktik sosiokultural). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, terdapat wacana meritokrasi pendidikan yang dikonstruksi oleh drama SKY Castle sebagai bentuk representasi praktik rumah tangga kaya di Korea Selatan dalam upaya mempertahankan status mereka, dan menuju posisi yang lebih tinggi pada hierarki sosial. Adapun kelima sampel penonton secara umum mengatakan bahwa adegan-adegan dan suasana yang dibangun dalam drama dinilai relevan dengan realita masyarakat Korea Selatan, meski secara spesifik terdapat perbedaan pemaknaan karena perbedaan latar belakang sosial budaya mereka. Kemudian pada analisis praktik sosiokultural menunjukkan bahwa meritokrasi pendidikan Korea Selatan memiliki akar sejarah sejak lebih dari 600 tahun lalu yakni pada masa Dinasti Joseon melalui Konfusianisme sebagai dasar kepercayaan, nilai, dan tradisi dalam sistem pendidikan Korea. Hingga kini, melalui kolaborasi antara kebijakan pemerintah terkait sistem pendidikan yang menjunjung perolehan nilai tinggi serta kompetensi di berbagai bidang, serta partisipasi masyarakat dalam berjuang untuk meraih hal tersebut, Korea berhasil dikenal sebagai negara dengan masyarakat berpendidikan tinggi. Namun di balik itu terdapat konsekuensi yang harus dibayar, yakni tingginya pengeluaran rumah tangga untuk pendidikan yang mengarah pada masalah-masalah seperti hutang hingga ketidaksetaraan sosial ekonomi.

Educational meritocracy, a system in which effort and competence are reflected through educational attainment. But even so, in reality, there are other factors that influence a person's chances of success, which cause meritocratic competition to start from unequal initial positions. In connection with these conditions, this study seeks to dismantle the elements of the educational meritocracy of South Korea in the drama series SKY Castle. This study uses Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis which consists of three levels of analysis (text construction, audience interpretation, sociocultural practice). The results show that there is a discourse on educational meritocracy constructed by the drama SKY Castle as a representative form of the practices of wealthy households in South Korea in an effort to maintain their status and climb to a higher position in the social hierarchy. The five audience samples generally said that the scenes and atmosphere that were built in the drama were considered relevant to the realities of South Korean society, although specifically there were variations in interpretation due to differences in their socio-cultural backgrounds. Then the analysis of sociocultural practices shows that South Korea's educational meritocracy has historical roots for more than 600 years, namely during the Joseon Dynasty through Confucianism as the basis of beliefs, values, and traditions in the Korean education system. Until now, through collaboration between government policies related to the education system that upholds the acquisition of high values and competence in various fields, as well as community participation in striving to achieve this, Korea has been recognized as a country with a highly educated society. But behind that, there are consequences that must be paid, such as the high household expenditure for education which leads to problems such as debt to socio-economic inequality.
