The Dilemma of the poor as reflected in Stephen Crane's Maggie :: A Girl of the streets

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan kehidupan dan dilema para kaum miskin yang hidup di daerah - daerah kumuh di New York pada saat Amerika memasuki era industrialisasi di akhir abad -19, seperti yang terrefleksi di dalam karya Stephen Crane, Mamie: A Girl of the Streets. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan yang dilaksanakan dengan mengaplikasikan pendekatan interdisipliner yang merupakan suatu ciri khas American Studies yang dalam ha1 ini melibatkan ilmu sejarah, sosiologi, psikologi dan satra. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pada era industrialisasi di akhir abad ke -19 di Amerika, yang dikuasai oleh prinsip Darwinism, yang kuat yang menang, kaum miskin dianggap sebagai kaum yang lemah yang tidak mampu bersaing dengan mereka yang kuat atau kaya. Kebanyakan kaum miskin ini adalah buruh rendahan yang menerima upah yang sangat minim yang tidak cukup untuk memenuhi kebutuhan mereka setiap hari. Mereka sepertinya sudah tidak bisa keluar dari keadaan mereka yang miskin dan tidak lagi punya pengharapan untuk kehidupan yang lebih baik di masa depan disebabkan mereka hanya bisa memikirkan bagaimana bisa bertahan hidup dari hari ke hari. Keadaan yang demikian membuat banyak kaum miskin yang menjadi putus asa dan tidak berdaya. Akibat situasi yang demikian, mereka menghadapi suatu dilema. Mereka ham memilih apakah mereka ingin memperbaiki hidup mereka dengan ikut terlibat didalam cara - cara yang tidak baik seperti kqahatan, kekerasan, prostitusi atau pada sisi yang lain mereka tetap miskin tetapi tetap memperbhankan moral mereka yang baik. Dalam ha1 ini Crane menunjukkan bahwa pada masa itu, banyak kaum miskin yang tinggal di daerah-daerah kumuh melakukan ha1 - ha1 yang tidak baik seperti kejahatan dan kekerasan disebabkan karena mereka tidak tahan dengan kehidupan mereka yang serba kekurangan. Lebih khusus kaum wanita terlibat dalam prostitusi disebabkan pula oleh pengaruh yang tidak baik dari lingkungan mereka seperti dari saloon, hotel - hotel murah dan tempat - tempat lainnya yang menjadikan prostitusi sebagai salah satu pelayanan mereka. Dalam ha1 ini Crane menunjukkan bahwa lingkungan berperan besar dalam menentukan kehidupan seseorang menjadi baik atau buruk

This thesis is mainly intended to depict the life and the dilemma of the poor who lived in the slum of New York in the new era of industrialization in the . late nineteenth century America as reflected in Crane’s Maclaie: A Girl of the Streets. This study is a library research that applies interdisciplinary approach, a distinctive feature of American studies, which involves historical, sociological, psychological and literary approaches. The result of this study reveals that at that era of new industrialization which was dominated by the principle of Darwinism, the survival of the fittest, the poor were considered the weak who were not able to compete with the fit. Many of the poor who lived in the slums in New York were the lowly workers who had a small wage which was not enough for their daily necessities. They were stuck in their poverty and saw no way for their better life in the future, since they just concerned with their daily survival. Such condition made many of the poor desperate and powerless. The consequence of that situation, many of the poor were faced with a dilemma. They had to choose whether on the one hand, to improve their life by being involved in demoralized deed or on the other hand, to remain in the poverty by maintaining their good morals. Crane points out that at that era of industrialization in the late nineteenth century, many of the poor who lived in the slums were involved in demoralized deed such as crime, violence and prostitution. Specifically, the poor women tended to be tempted to work as prostitutes since they were surrounded by the corrupt environments such as saloons, cheap hotels, theaters and so forth which provided the prostitution as one of their services. In this case, Crane attempts to point out that the environment tends to influence greatly the life of someone to be bad or good.
