TESTING THE BENIGN VIOLATION THEORY STUDY IN EASTERN CULTURE

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti aplikabilitas dari Teori Benign Violation di komunitas dengan budaya timur, secara khusus budaya Jawa. Penelitian dilaksanakan dengan metode eksperimen dan distribusikan melalui Google Forms. Instrumen eksperimen didasari dan dimodifikasi dari studi 1 dari penelitian asli Teori Benign Violation. Responden utama merupakan 57 mahasiswa S1 Indonesia yang mengidentifikasi diri sebagai etnis Jawa. Intervensi dimanipulasi within subjects, dan urutan dimanipulasi between subjects. Data dianalisa dengan one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Hasil menunjukkan bahwa Teori Benign Violation dapat diterapkan di komunitas dengan budaya Jawa.

This thesis research aimed to discover the applicability of the Benign Violation Theory of humor in Eastern culture communities, specifically Javanese communities, and thus also aims to scrutinize the universality of the theory. The instrument in the experiment was based on and was modified from study one of the original research of Benign Violation Theory. This research was conducted in the form of an experiment and distributed through Google Forms. The main respondents were 57 undergraduate university students in Indonesia who identify as Javanese. Interventions were manipulated within subjects, and the two order factors were manipulated between subjects. Data was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results have shown that Benign Violation Theory is applicable in Javanese culture community.
