POTENSI PROPOLIS SEBAGAI BAHAN TAMBAHAN PERIODONTAL DRESSING

Periodontal dressing adalah balut luka yang digunakan untuk melindungi jaringan luka dan memberikan kenyamanan pasien pasca perawatan bedah periodontal. Penggunaan periodontal dressing seringkali tidak memberikan hasil memuaskan karena memiliki beberapa kekurangan. Modifikasi dan penambahan bahan aktif dilakukan untuk memberikan efektifitas terapi periodontal dressing. Penambahan bahan alam menjadi pilihan karena relatif lebih aman, mudah diterima tubuh, dan tersedia dalam jumlah melimpah. Propolis merupakan produk lebah madu yang memiliki kandungan zat aktif seperti flavonoid, senyawa fenol, dan ester yang bermanfaat dalam proses penyembuhan. Propolis dalam kedokteran gigi sudah dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan anestesi topikal, bahan perawatan saluran akar, pasta gigi antikaries, dan bahan obat kumur yang efektif. Tujuan narrative review ini adalah untuk mengkaji potensi propolis sebagai bahan tambahan periodontal dressing. Pencarian literatur dilakukan menggunakan database Pubmed, Science Direct, dan Google Scholar dengan kata kunci periodontal dressing, dressing, pack, zinc oxide, wound healing, dan propolis. Sintesis data mengacu pada metode naratif dengan memperhatikan kriteria inklusi serta eksklusi literatur. Jurnal yang digunakan dalam narrative review ini berjumlah 42, dilengkapi dengan 4 buku sebagai referensi. Bedah periodontal merupakan terapi fase II dalam perawatan penyakit periodontal yang menghasilkan daerah perlukaan. Periodontal dressing diaplikasikan pasca perawatan bedah karena memberikan keuntungan untuk menutup daerah luka. Pemberian bahan tambahan periodontal dressing dilakukan sebagai alternatif bahan sintesis terutama untuk untuk bahan alam yang mempunyai efek antibakteri dan peningkatan penyembuhan luka. Propolis merupakan bahan alam yang memiliki aktifitas antimikroba spektrum luas, agen anti plak, serta mempercepat proses penyembuhan luka. Bahan periodontal dressing seperti zink oksida memberikan efek sinergis saat dikombinasikan dengan propolis. Propolis relatif aman digunakan tetapi dalam konsentrasi yang tidak tepat dapat menimbulkan efek samping. Sifat menguntungkan propolis dan kemampuan untuk menghasilkan efek sinergis dengan bahan dressing membuktikan bahwa propolis berpotensi digunakan sebagai bahan tambahan periodontal dressing. Penelitian untuk menemukan komposisi, konsentrasi, dan formula penambahan propolis yang efektif perlu dilakukan.

Periodontal dressing is a wound dressing used to protect the wound and provide comfort for patients after periodontal surgery. The use of periodontal dressing often does not provide satisfactory results because it has several drawbacks. Modification and addition of active ingredients were carried out to provide the effectiveness of periodontal dressing therapy. The addition of natural ingredients is an option because it is relatively safer, easily accepted by the body, and is available in abundance. Propolis is a honey-bee product that contains active substances such as flavonoids, phenol compounds, and esters which are useful in the healing process. In dentistry, propolis has been used as a topical anesthetic, root canal treatment agent, anticaries toothpaste, and an effective mouthwash agent. The purpose of this narrative review is to examine the potential of propolis as an additional material for periodontal dressing. The literature search was carried out using the Pubmed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases with the keywords periodontal dressing, dressing, pack, zinc oxide, wound healing, and propolis. Data synthesis refers to the narrative method by taking the inclusion and exclusion criteria. There are 42 journals used in this narrative review, equipped with 4 books as references. Periodontal surgery is a phase II therapy in the treatment of periodontal diseases. Periodontal dressings are applied after surgical treatment because they provide the advantage of covering the wound area. Periodontal dressing is given as an alternative to synthetic materials, especially for natural ingredients that have an antibacterial effect and increase wound healing. Propolis is a natural ingredient which has broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, anti-plaque agent, and accelerates the wound healing process. Periodontal dressing materials such as zinc oxide provide a synergistic effect when combined with propolis. Propolis is relatively safe to use but in the wrong concentration it can cause side effects. The beneficial properties of propolis and the ability to produce synergistic effects with dressing materials prove that propolis has the potential to be used as an additive for periodontal dressings. Research to find the composition, concentration, and formula for adding propolis that is effective needs to be done.
