Transformation images of women in American popular literature

Dalam studi sastra secara umum, sastra biasanya dibedakan menjadi sastra serius dan sastra populer. Anggapan umum mengatakan bahwa karya sastra populer dianggap tidak layak untuk dikaji. Karya sastra populer dianggap hanya menekankan aspek hiburan bagi pembaca dan aspek komersial bagi pengarang. Studi ini dilakukan dengan dua tujuan utama. Pertama, studi ini mengkaji citra wanita dalam beberapa cerita hard-boiled detective dan melodrama. Tujuan kedua adalah mengungkap apa yang tersirat di balik penggambaran citra wanita tersebut. Dalam kajian ini juga tercakup gambaran transformasi citra wanita dari cerita hard-boiled detective pada dekade 1940 - 1960 ke cerita hard-boiled detective pada dekade 1990. Studi ini juga dimaksudkan untuk menunjukkan bahwa dengan kriteria tersendiri, karya sastra populer layak untuk dikaji secara akademis, terutama untuk mengungkapkan fenomena covert culture. Hasil studi menunjukkan citra wanita yang negatif dalam cerita-cerita hardboiled defective pada dekade 1940-1960, yang berubah menjadi positif dalam cerita-cerita hard-boiled detective pada dekade 1990. Hasil analisis juga menunj ukkan bahwa dalam masyarakat Amerika Serikat terjadi subordinasi wanita bahkan sampai pada dekade 1990

In the study of literature in general, literature is divided into serious literature and popular literature. There has been a widespread assumption that popular literature is not worth studying, because popular literature is said to simply emphasize pleasure for the readers and commercial aspects for the authors. The study is conducted with two objectives. First, the study is carried out to examine the image of women characters in hard-boiled detective stories and melodramas. Second, the study intends to reveal what is signified in American society by such portrayals. The study also covers the transformation images of women in hard-boiled detective stories of the 1940s to 1960s to those of the 1990s. The study is also aimed at showing that popular literature, in its own criteria, is worth studying, especially to reveal the covert culture of a society. Findings of the study show the negative images of women in hard-boiled detective stories of the decades 1940-1960, which transform into the positive image of women in hard-boiled detective stories of the 1990s. The study also reveals women subordination in American society up to the present time.
