KONSERVASI SURAT KABAR LAMA DI PERPUSTAKAAN NASIONAL REPUBLIK INDONESIA

Tugas Akhir ini membahas konservasi salah satu bahan pustaka yang berada di Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia, yaitu surat kabar lama. Kearsipan ataupun perpustakaan memiliki tugas untuk melakukan pelestarian terhadap koleksi yang dimiliki, baik untuk fungsi keindahan dan penggunaan informasi sebagai referensi di masa yang akan datang. Konservasi dilakukan dengan tujuan memperpanjang usia sekaligus memperlambat proses deteriorasi suatu koleksi karena nilai sejaran maupun frekuensi penggunaan yang cukup besar. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan penulis dalam penyusunan Tugas Akhir ini terdiri dari tiga cara, yaitu : metode observasi partisipasi, wawancara, dan studi pustaka. Observasi partisipasi dilakukan saat pelaksanaan Praktik Kerja Lapangan (PKL) di Pusat Preservasi Bahan Pustaka Perpustakaan Nasional RI. Sebagai pelengkap data, penulis juga melakukan wawancara melalui proses tanya jawab terhadap beberapa narasumber yang merupakan kepala bidang dan staf di Pusat Preservasi Perpustakaan Nasional RI. Sedangkan studi pustaka yaitu dengan mencari berbagai literatur berupa buku ataupun jurnal ilmiah yang digunakan penulis sebagai tinjauan dan pembanding terhadap pelaksanaan konservasi di instansi tempat pelaksanaan PKL. Konservasi dibagi menjadi 4 tahapan sesuai dengan tingkat kerusakan yang dialami. Keempat tinggatan tersebut yakni konservasi preventif yang merupakan tahapan paling dasar, konservasi pasif, konservasi aktif, dan yang paling kompleks adalah restorasi. Konservasi surat kabar lama dimulai dengan melakukan pencegahan terhadap faktor eksternal yang mampu merusak koleksi. Selain itu dengan memperbaiki fisik surat kabar yang sudah rusak dengan bantuan mesin-mesin canggih seperti leafcaster, pemotong kertas, dan sebagainya yang mendukung kemajuan konservasi di Perpustakaan Nasional RI.

This final paper will discuss about the conservation of one of library materials in The National Library of The Republic of Indonesia, the old newspapers. As is well-known, both archives and libraries have a duty to preserve a collection that is held, whether for beauty function or the use of information in the future. Conservation aims to extend the life all at once will retard the deterioration process of a collection because of historical value, even though the frequency of use is quite large. The method of collecting data used by for this final paper consists of three ways: observation of participation, interviews, and library studies. The observation of participation was carried out during the implementation of the Field Works Practice (PKL) at the Indonesian National Library Library Material Preservation Center. The PKL conducted by the author with a period of 2 months starting from January 2020. As a complement to the data, the authors also conducted interviews through a question and answer process for several speakers, the heads of staff and the staff at the National Library Preservation Center of the Republic of Indonesia. Whereas the literature study seeks literature of both books and scientific journals used by the authors as a review and comparison to the conservation at the existing institutions of PKL. Conservation is divided into 4 stages, according to the level of damage. The four levels are preventive conservation which is the most basic stage, passive conservation, curative conservation, and the most complex is restoration. Conservation of old newspapers started with commite prevention of external factors that have possibility can damage the collection. Moreover repair the broken old newspapers using sophisticated machine such as leafcaster, automatic paper trimmer, etcetera is highly recommended as conservation action in National Library of The Republic of Indonesia.
