Empowerment and Transformation of Black Motherhood in the 20th Century United States of America: Collins' Black Feminist Study of Gwendolyn Brooks' Selected Poems

Penelitian ini mengungkap Black motherhood para perempuan Afrika-Amerika pada abad ke-20 di Amerika Serikat. Tujuan-tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengungkap pengalaman Black motherhood para perempuan Afrika-Amerika pada abad ke-20 sebagaimana tampak dalam puisi-puisi terpilih karya Gwendolyn Brooks dan untuk meneliti perubahan pengalaman Black motherhood dalam maupun di sekitar abad ke-20. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori feminisme kulit hitam yang digagas oleh Patricia Hill Collins (2000) guna melihat penindasan ras, gender, dan kelas yang saling berkelindan dalam relasi kuasa masyarakat Amerika, dan memposisikan Black motherhood para perempuan Afrika-Amerika di tengah-tengah produksi pengetahuan terkait pemberdayaan mereka. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pengalaman Black motherhood di Amerika Serikat pada abad ke-20 yang memuat nilai-nilai dukungan dan sisterhood, upaya bertahan hidup dan meraih kesuksesan, pengabdian kepada komunitas, dan pentingnya membuat keputusan yang terinformasi dan bertanggung jawab untuk menjalani hidup yang bermartabat telah membuat sesama ibu Afrika-Amerika, anak perempuan mereka, komunitas, dan diri mereka sendiri berdaya. Hasil penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa pengalaman Black motherhood para perempuan Afrika-Amerika telah mengalami transformasi di dalam maupun pada sekitar abad ke-20, yang ditandai oleh perubahan bentuk, nilai-nilai, dan cakupan interaksi dan komunikasi pada publik. Akan tetapi, meskipun terdapat perubahan-perubahan itu, pemberdayaan secara konsisten ditemukan dalam pengalaman Black motherhood.

This research reveals Black motherhood as experienced by African-American mothers in the 20th century USA. The objectives of this research are to reveal the empowering experiences of Black motherhood in the 20th century USA as reflected in the selected poems of Gwendolyn Brooks and to investigate the transformation of Black motherhood experiences within and surrounding the 20th century. This research employs Black feminist theory by Patricia Hill Collins (2000) to recognize intersecting oppressions of race, gender, and class in American power relations, and center the African-American women's experiences in the production of knowledge for empowerment. The results of this research show that Black motherhood experiences in the 20th century USA empower African-American mothers, daughters, community, and the mother's individual self with values about support and sisterhood, survival and success, service to the community, and the importance of making informed and responsible choices to live a dignified life. The results of this research also show that the experiences of Black motherhood in American society have undergone transformation within and surrounding the 20th century namely the transformation of forms, values, and public engagement extent. Yet the empowerment salient in the experiences of Black motherhood has been consistent.
