Debunking the Post-Racial Notion: A Racial Prejudice In American Society As Reflected In Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give

Berbagai macam ras dari berbagai suku yang hidup bersama dalam satu tempat seharusnya menjadikan Amerika sebagai suatu rumah yang utuh. Sayangnya, keberagaman itu justru membawa Amerika pada kemunduran karena konstruksi sosial yang ada di masyarakat. Konstruksi sosial yang dibangun, mempercayai bahwa hierarki menentukan suatu kedudukan dari kelompok masyarakat lainnya. Etnis yang memegang hierarki tertinggi di Amerika merupakan kulit putih dan sisanya adalah kelompok minoritas. Saat ini, Amerika masih sibuk dengan masalah ketimpangan sosial yang termasuk prasangka rasial. The Hate U Give membawa masalah sosial yang merebak ke masyarakat kulit berwarna, terutama Afrika-Amerika. Dalam novelnya, Thomas menggambarkan ketidakadilan yang terjadi pada komunitas Afrika-Amerika karena profil rasial yang dilakukan oleh orang kulit putih. Penulis melakukan penelitian menggunakan teori Racial Prejudice oleh McLemore untuk melihat jenis-jenis prasangka yang terjadi di masyarakat. Penulis juga menguraikannya dengan teori Du Bois yaitu Double Consciousness dalam menganalisis efek prasangka rasial terhadap orang Afrika-Amerika. Ketidakadilan yang dirasakan masih sering diperoleh oleh orang Afrika-Amerika di mana mereka masih tidak dapat memiliki hak-hak mereka sebagai warga negara di Amerika Serikat seperti kesetaraan pendidikan, ekonomi, dan perlindungan hukum. Hal ini disebabkan oleh adanya kondisi kelas sosial yang terkendala oleh ras mayoritas yang berusaha mempertahankan posisinya sebagai 'penguasa' dalam masyarakat Amerika. Selain itu, permasalahan ini juga berkaitan dengan beredarnya ideology Pos-rasial dimana orang kulit putih Amerika menganggap bahwa pembicaraan mengenai ras merupakan suatu hal yang sudah tidak diperlukan.

Various races from various ethnics that live together in one place should have made America as a whole nation. Unfortunately, it brings America to suffer a setback because of the social construction that exists in the society. A social construction that believed one community group or ethnic has a higher hierarchy than other community groups. Ethnic that holds the highest hierarchy in America is usually white and the other is just minority groups. Today, America is still busy with the problems of inequality which include the racial prejudice. The Hate U Give brings social issues that are rife to people of color, especially African Americans. In her novel, Thomas illustrates the injustice that had happened to the African American community because of the racial profiling that was carried out by white people. The writer conducts the study using Racial Prejudice theory by McLemore to see the types of prejudice that happened in the society. The writer also elaborates it with Du Bois Double Consciousness in analyzing the effect of racial prejudice towards the African American. The study found out that perceived injustice is still often obtained by African American where they still cannot have their rights as citizens in the United States such as educational equality, economics, and legal protection. This is caused by the existence of social class conditions which are constrained by the majority race which tries to maintain its position as a 'ruler' in American society, the other factor is by the spreading ideology about Post-Racial where majority think that talking about racial issue is no longer relevant.
