Influences of Hollywood on Indonesia Movie: A Transnational Study of Western Movie in Buffalo Boys (2018)

Penyebaran film Hollywood menyebabkan perfilman diluar Hollywood berubah dan perubahan tersebut diakibatkan oleh dominasi film Hollywood. Perfiman di Indonesia menjadi salah satu yang ikut terpengaruh oleh dominasi film Hollywood, banyaknya impor film Hollywood ke Indonesia menjadi salah satu faktor perubahan pada perfilman di Indonesia, pengimporan film di Indonesia sudah dimulai pada masa Kolonial, Orde Lama, Orde Baru dan hingga saat ini. Penelitian ini menganalisis Buffalo Boys (2018), sebuah film Indonesia-Singapore dengan genre laga, film ini menceritakan tentang dua bersaudara Jamar dan Suwo yang kembali dari Amerika pada tahun 1860-an. Ayah mereka adalah sulthan di Jawa tetapi meninggal di tangan penjajah dan mereka datang untuk membalas kematian ayah mereka. Film ini berbeda dari film-film Indonesia yang bertema kolonialisme, jika biasanya dilm Indonesia menampilkan para pahlawan dengan identitas Indonesia seperti pahlawan nasional Indonesia, namun film ini menampilkan koboi sebagai pahlawan. Umumnya, penelitian ini melihat permasalahan melalui sudut pandang transnasional untuk mengetahui pengaruh Hollywood pada film Indonesia dan secara khusus menggunakan semiotik Bathes mengenai semiotika lapis kedua untuk menganalisis film Buffalo Boys. Selain itu, penelitian ini menggunakan metode qualitative dan mengumpulkan data melalui informasi dari penelitian yang telah ditulis sebelumnya. Penelitian ini melihat pengaruh Hollywood melalui film western sebagai genre film yang diproduksi oleh Hollywood, film western secara umum menyampaikan tiga permasalahan yaitu permasalahan ras dan etnis, kelas sosial dan gender. Ketiga permasalahan tersebut berkaitan dengan ideologi-ideologi seperti kekuasan kulit putih, kapitalisme dan pathriarki. Film western memengaruhi film di Indonesia seperti diperlihatkan dalam film Buffalo Boys dan film ini akhirnya menyampaikan ketiga permasalahan tersebut diatas yang dipresentasikan melalui elemen-elemen seperti setting, karakterisasi maupun narasi.

The spread of Hollywood movie causes movie industries outside Hollywood being changed and the changes are caused by Hollywood domination. Indonesian movie industries are also being one of those affected. Many imported movies to Indonesia have become one of factors that changed Indonesian movie. In addition, imported movies in Indonesia can be found during the Colonial Period, the Old Order, the New Order and today. This study analyses Buffalo Boys (2018), an Indonesian-Singaporean movie with action genre, this movie tells about two brothers Jamar and Suwo who came back from America in 1860s. Their father was sulthan in Java but died in the hand of colonialist and they come to revenge death of their father. This movie is different from other Indonesian movies with the theme of colonialism which shows heroes with Indonesian identity such as Indonesia national hero, however, this movie shows cowboy as the heroes. Generally, this study answers the research of studies through a transnational point of view to find out influences of Hollywood on Indonesian movies and specifically uses the semiotic of Barthes about secondary signification to analyze Buffalo Boys. This study looks influences Hollywood through western movie as one of movie genre produced by Hollywood, this western movie conveys three issues such as racial and ethnic, social class and gender. Moreover, those three issues are related to white supremacy, capitalism and pathriarchy. The western movie have influenced Indonesian movie industry as presented in Buffalo Boys, this movie is also conveyed the three problems mentioned above which is presented through elements, similar characterization or narration.
