Feminism Spirit in Roald Dahl's Matilda: Resistance against Women's Objectification

Novel Matilda karya Roald Dahl merefleksikan spirit feminisme ditunjukkan dengan karakter-karakter perempuannya yang mencerminkan kesetaraan gender dalam bidang pendidikan dan ketenagakerjaan di samping melawan objektifikasi. Penelitian ini membahas objektifikasi yang dialami oleh Matilda dan Miss Honey serta bagaimana mereka menerapkan strategi-strategi perlawanan dari lensa feminisme. Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengetahui klasifikasi-klasifikasi objektifikasi perempuan. Sebuah novel berjudul Matilda berkisah tentang seorang gadis bernama Matilda dan gurunya, Miss Honey yang mengalami objektifikasi dari Mr. Wormwood, ayah Matilda, dan Miss Trunchbull, sang kepala sekolah sekaligus bibi dari Miss Honey. Untuk menemukan jenis-jenis objektifikasi wanita dan strategi perlawanan, peneliti menggunakan teori objektifikasi Martha Nussbaum dan S. Bosacki, D.C. Jack. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa Matilda mengalami empat tipe objektifikasi, sementara Miss Honey mengalami tiga tipe objektifikasi. Selanjutnya, untuk melawan objektifikasi-objektifikasi tersebut, Matilda menerapkan strategi pendiaman-tidak-ramah. Di samping itu, Miss Honey menerapkan strategi pendiaman-aman yang kemudian berubah menjadi pendiaman-tidak-ramah seiring dengan tumbuhnya ia menjadi wanita muda berpendidikan. Terlebih lagi, penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa strategi-strategi tersebut mencermikan tujuan dari gelombang feminisme kedua karena bersesuaian dengan tujuan Gerakan Perempuan Inggris pada tahun 1980-an, oleh karena itu, hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa Matilda karya Roald Dahl telah mencerminkan spirit feminisme di era gelombang feminisme kedua.

Roald Dahl's Matilda articulates feminism spirit as the female characters reflect gender equality in education and employment sector and also resist the objectification. This research is aimed to discover the classifications of women's objectification which is reflected by Matilda and Miss Honey and also their resistance strategies to fight against women's objectification. Matilda, a story about a girl named Matilda and her teacher, Miss Honey who experience objectification which comes from Mr.Wormwood as Matilda's father and also Miss Trunchbull, the headmistress or Miss Honey's aunt. In order to discover about the classifications of women's objectification and resistance strategies, the researcher employs Martha Nussbaum's theory of objectification and S.Bosacki, D.C. Jack. This research discovers that Matilda experiences four types of objectification, meanwhile Miss Honey experiences three types of objectification. Moreover, to resist those types of objectification Matilda implements hostile silence. Besides, Miss Honey implements safe silence which is developed into hostile silence as she grows up to be an educated young woman. Furthermore, this research also discovers that those strategies reflect second wave feminism goal since they correspond with the goal of Britain Women's Movements in 1980s, therefore it is shown that Roald Dahl's Matilda has reflected feminism spirit in second wave feminism era.
