The Emerging Jobs in Platform Economy : Between Employment Opportunities and Vulnerabilities

This research motivated by the development of the platform economy in Indonesia. This thesis is trying to find out how the process of creating new jobs and also new types of professions caused by the development of the platform in Indonesia. The objectives are to examine the consequences of joining platform work in terms of the vulnerability of these workers. The theory used in this study is the theory of vulnerability and risk society. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive method. Data collection techniques in this paper use secondary data from the previous literature. There are some critical finding brought by this research. Firstly, the good side, platform economy positively helps in reducing unemployment. The process was executed by promoting an easier way for individuals to get jobs through enlisting their self as partners for a digital platform company, For example, in online transportation. Secondly, it creates the emergence of a new profession in our society, which are better known as platform worker. However, despite its impact on decreasing unemployment, this research also found some drawback towards the emergence of the platform economy. Firstly, this new profession is considered as a vulnerable worker by definition described by the precarious worker theory. This unsafe condition then places individuals who have such professions into more significant threats, namely socio-economic vulnerability. Secondly, the researcher also found forms of exploitation to this worker, social inequalities and threat to future poverty
