Depressive Disorder as Experienced by Ethan Frome in Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome

Penelitian ini mendiskusikan tentang gangguan depresi yang dialami tokoh Ethan Frome dalam novel Ethan Frome karya Edith Wharton. Studi ini mengaplikasikan pendekatan objektif dan konsep depresi dalam Psikologi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penyebab-penyebab dan penggambaran depresi yang dialami tokoh Ethan. Penyebab-penyebab dari depresi dibahas dari tinjauan psikologi dan sosial-budaya. Penggambaran gangguan depresi diidentifikasi melalui karakterisasi tokoh Ethan Frome yang memiliki kaitan dengan ciri-ciri klinis gangguan depresi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Ethan menderita gangguan depresi karena ia tidak dapat menerima ketidaksesuaian antara harapan dan angan-angannya dengan realita dan kebeneran dalam hidupnya. Selain itu, terdapat tiga ciri-ciri klinis gangguan depresi yang ditemukan dalam karakterisasi Ethan. Ciri-ciri tersebut adalah kondisi pikiran atau perasaan yang depresif, kemunduran dalam hubungan dengan keluarga dan masyarakat, serta pikiran tentang bunuh diri. This study discusses the depressive disorder as experienced by Ethan Frome in Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome. This research applies the objective approach and the concept of depressive disorder or depression in Psychology. It aims at analyzing the causes as well as the portrayal of Ethan's depressive disorder. The causes are examined from the psychological and socio-cultural point of views. The portrayal of depressive disorder is identified through the characterization of Ethan Frome that are relevant to the clinical features of depression. The result shows that Ethan suffers from depressive disorder due to the discrepancy between his expectations or delusion and the reality or truth of his condition that he cannot accept. Furthermore, three clinical features of depression are found in his characterization. They are depressed mood, deterioration in family and society relationships, and suicidal ideation.
