Analyzing the Success and Failures over the Implementation of Balanced Scorecard in Hospitals

Balanced Scorecard merupakan salah satu konsep yang telah digunakan oleh berbagai macam organisasi. Dalam implementasi Balanced Scorecard berbagai macam organisasi, terdapat kemungkinan kegagalan dalam mengimplementasikan Balanced Scorecard. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang berkontribusi terhadap kesuksesan maupun kegagalan implementasi dari Balanced Scorecard di rumah sakit. Penelitian ini menggunakan methode kualitatif dengan menganalisa berbagai macam studi kasus mengenai implementasi balanced scorecard di rumah sakit. Implementasi dari Balanced Scorecard, keuntungan dan kelemahan dari balanced scorecard serta analisa dari karakteristik rumah sakit digunakan untuk mendapatkan faktor-faktor yang berpengaruh terhadap kesuksesan dan kegagalan dari implementasi Balanced Scorecard. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa karakteristik dari rumah sakit yang digambarkan oleh tipe kepemilikan tidak berkontribusi terhadap kesuksesan maupun kegagalan dari aplikasi balanced scorecard di rumah sakit. Selain itu, hasil dari penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa dukungan dari top management dan kemampuan manajemen untuk menyelaraskan pengukuran dan tujuan strategis merupakan dua faktor yang menyebabkan kesuksesan dan kegagalan dalam implementasi balanced scorecard di rumah sakit.

The concept of the balanced scorecard has been used in many organizations, including hospitals. However, there is a high probability of failure in the application of the balanced scorecard in the hospital. This paper aims to investigate the drivers behind the success and failures of the use of the balanced scorecard in hospitals. This study utilized a qualitative research method by reviewing the case studies regarding balanced scorecard implementation in hospitals. The study starts by conducting an assessment regarding the implementation of balanced scorecard in the hospital. The advantages and disadvantages of the balanced scorecard are examined to derive the results. Furthermore, the characteristics of hospitals also analyzed to understand whether certain types of hospitals affect the success and failures implementation of the balanced scorecard. The results concluded that the characteristics of hospitals which depicted by ownership types do not contribute towards the success or failures application of the balanced scorecard in hospital. Furthermore, the results also show that top management support and ability to align the measures with strategic objectives are two main drivers which affect the success and failures of balanced scorecard implementation in the hospitals.
