Sepanjang tahun 2012, negara Mali mengalami krisis yang parah. Mali menghadapi salah satu krisis paling parah sejak kemerdekaan pada 22 September 1960. Pada pertengahan Januari, serangan yang dilakukan oleh pemberontak Tuareg, yang didukung oleh kelompok-kelompok ekstrimis Islam bersenjata, telah menguasai hampir sepertiga wilayah negara tersebut. Pada 22 Maret, sebulan sebelum pemilihan presiden yang telah dijadwalkan, kudeta militer terjadi untuk menggulingkan Presiden Amadou Toumani Toure. Dalam situasi tersebut, organisasi organisasi regional menjadi aktor utama. Salah satu respon paling aktif terhadap situasi tersebut berasal dari negara negara tetangga Mali, dalam bentuk intervensi diplomatik oleh Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk menelaah peran yang dimainkan oleh ECOWAS dalam mengatasi krisis di Mali. Skripsi ini juga berusaha mengidentifikasi faktor faktor penentu dibalik keberhasilan ECOWAS dalam kasus ini. Skripsi ini juga mengeksplorasi akar penyebab utama dan pengaruh dari dunia internasional yang menyebabkan krisis pada tahun 2012 di Mali.

Throughout most of 2012, Mali was in a state of deep crisis.Mali has faced one of the most severe crises since independence on September 22, 1960. In mid-January, a lightning offensive by the Tuareg rebellion, backed by armed Islamist groups, captured nearly a third of the country's territory. On March 22, a month before the scheduled presidential election, a military coup overthrew President Amadou Toumani Toure. In this situation, regional organizations have become key actors. One of the most active responses to this state of affairs came from Mali's neighbours, in the form of diplomatic interventions by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This thesis aims to explore the role played by ECOWAS in addressing the crises in Mali. It also identifies determinants behind the success of ECOWAS in this case. It also explores the prominent root causes and global influences that account for the 2012 crisis in Mali.
