CHANGING DEMAND OF PULP AND PAPER: THE CASE OF INDONESIAN EXPORTS

Studi ini menggunakan data panel pada chemical wood pulp dan uncoated paper and paperboard untuk menganalisis kinerja ekspor Indonesia antara tahun 2001 dan 2017 menggunakan model gravitasi. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menilai kinerja ekspor industri pulp dan kertas Indonesia, yang sangat penting untuk pertumbuhan ekonomi berkelanjutan di Indonesia, terutama setelah krisis keuangan Asia. Fokus pada chemical wood pulp dan uncoated paper and paperboard, penelitian ini menganalisis kinerja ekspor melalui penerapan model gravitasi antara tahun 2001 dan 2017. Temuan utama dapat diringkas bahwa PDB per kapita negara pengimpor, permintaan sebelumnya, dan harga merupakan faktor penting untuk ekspor pulp dan kertas dari Indonesia. Selain itu, ada permintaan yang terus berkembang akan pulp dan kertas. Negara China telah menjadi importir utama pulp, dan Asia telah tumbuh menjadi pasar penting untuk kertas dan kertas karton. Selain itu, permintaan akan produk sanitasi tumbuh di seluruh dunia. Dalam hal ini, Indonesia harus membuat strategi yang efektif untuk pengembangan sektor ini sambil mempertimbangkan pengelolaan hutan berkelanjutan. This paper applies the panel data on chemical wood pulp and uncoated paper and paperboard to analyze the export performance of Indonesia between 2001 and 2017 using the gravity model. This study aims to assess the export performance of Indonesia�¢ï¿½ï¿½s pulp and paper industry, which is vital for sustained economic growth in Indonesia, especially after Asian financial crisis. Focusing on the chemical wood pulp and uncoated paper and paper board sectors, this research analyzes the export performance through applying the gravity model between 2001 and 2017. The key findings can be summarized that the GDP per capita of the importing country, previous demand, and price are significant factors for the pulp and paper exports from Indonesia. Furthermore, there is an evolving demand for pulp and paper. China has become the primary importer of pulp, and Asia has grown into an important market for paper and paperboard. In addition, the demand for sanitary products is growing all over the world. In this regard, Indonesia should make effective strategies for the development of these sector while considering the sustainable management of forest.
