The Metamorphosis of Grete Samsa: Understanding the Development of Character Roles Through External and Internal Conflict in Franz Kafka's Novella "The Metamorphosis"

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk membahas hubungan konflik dan pengembangan peran karakter terutama bagaimana hal tersebut mempengaruhi karakter Grete Samsa dalam novella dari Franz Kafka, "The Metamorphosis." Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini diambil dari terjemahan novel asli Franz Kafka yang berjudul "Die Verwandlung," oleh David Wyllie menjadi "Metamorphosis," diterbitkan dalam format eBook oleh Project Guttenberg pada tahun 2005. Novella tersebut diunduh dari halaman resmi Project Guttenberg dan data pendukung lainnya maupun teori dikumpulkan dari buku-buku lain yang relevan, eBook, halaman web, artikel, arsip, jurnal, majalah, surat kabar, dan sumber-sumber lain yang masih berkaitan. Metode pendekatan objektif oleh M. H. Abrams digunakan untuk menganalisa teks. Karena penelitian ini berfokus pada pengembangan peran karakter, penulis menggunakan beberapa pengertian definisi dan teori, pertama pembagian plot menurut Gustav Freytag, kemudian pengertian karakter datar & bundar oleh E. M. Foster, diikuti oleh penjelasan konflik eksternal & internal oleh Sunaryono Basuki Koesnosoebroto dan juga kategorisasi peran menurut Louis E. Catron. Masing-masing definisi dan teori ini kemudian digunakan untuk mendefinisikan dan menganalisis teks untuk menemukan korelasi antara konflik dan pengembangan peran karakter.

This research is conducted to examine the relation between conflict and the development of character's roles particularly how its affect the character of Grete Samsa in Franz Kafka's novella, "The Metamorphosis." The data used in this research were taken from a translation of Franz Kafka original novella entitled "Die Verwandlung" by David Wyllie as "Metamorphosis," published in an Ebook format by Project Guttenberg in 2005. The novella is downloaded from the official Project Guttenberg pages and the other supporting data or theories were gathered from other relevant books, eBooks, web pages, articles, archive, journals, magazine, newspaper and other possible sources. The objective approach by M. H. Abrams is used to analyze the text. Since the research focuses on the character's roles development, the writer utilizes several definition and theory. Firstly the division of plot according to Gustav Freytag, then the definition of flat & round character by E. M. Foster, followed by the explanation of external & internal conflict by Sunaryono Basuki Koesnosoebroto and also the categorization of roles according to Louis E. Catron. Each of these definitions and theories then were used to define and analyze the text to reveals the correlation between conflict and character roles developments.
