SURAT KABAR JEPANG DAN REPRESENTASI IDENTITAS KOMUNITAS JEPANG DI JAWA SEBELUM PERANG PASIFIK, 1916-1941

Studi ini membahas tentang representasi identitas komunitas Jepang di dalam surat kabar Jepang di Jawa sebelum Perang Pasifik. Pertanyaan utama studi ini adalah bagaimana identitas komunitas Jepang terepresentasi di dalam surat kabar yang mereka terbitkan. Sumber utama studi ini adalah surat kabar Jepang yang terbit di Jawa antara 1916 hingga 1941. Studi ini memanfaatkan enam surat kabar Jepang yang terbit selama periode dua puluh lima tahun tersebut, baik yang secara spesifik menyasar segmen pembaca komunitas Jepang maupun yang menyasar segmen pembaca umum. Dalam membahas representasi identitas komunitas Jepang, studi ini tidak hanya menganalisis teks, tetapi juga gambar yang dimuat oleh surat kabar Jepang. Pembahasan dalam studi ini difokuskan pada tiga aspek yang membentuk identitas komunitas Jepang, yaitu pandangan terhadap diri sendiri, pandangan terhadap tanah air Jepang, dan pandangan terhadap tanah tempat tinggal Hindia Belanda. Studi ini menemukan bahwa ketiga aspek tersebut senantiasa berubah karena mengalami negosiasi dengan realitas mutakhir yang dihadapi komunitas Jepang di tempat tinggal barunya.

This study discusses the representation of Japanese community identity in Japanese newspapers in Java before the Pacific War. The main question of this study is how the identity of the Japanese community is represented in their newspapers. The main source of this study is Japanese newspapers published on Java between 1916 and 1941. This study uses six Japanese newspapers published in the twenty-five year period, both those specifically targeting the Japanese reader segment as well as those targeting the general reader segment. In discussing the representation of Japanese community identity, this study not only analyzes texts, but also pictures published by Japanese newspapers. The discussion in this study focused on three aspects that construct the identity of the Japanese community, that were their views of themselves, their views of their home country Japan, and their views of their host country Netherlands Indie. This study found that these three aspects were always changing because they experienced negotiations with the latest situation facing the Japanese community in the host country they lived.
