KESALAHAN PENGGUNAAN PREPOSISI BAHASA INGGRIS OLEH MAHASISWA JURUSAN BAHASA INGGRIS DI YOGYAKARTA

Tesis ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan eror pada penggunaan preposisi bahasa Inggris pada mahasiswa jurusan bahasa Inggris di Yogyakarta dengan menganalisis jenis-jenis preposisi yang sering menimbulkan eror, kategori eror yang muncul, serta penyebab munculnya eror. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, peneliti menganalisis ujaran dari 20 orang mahasiswa yang sedang mempelajari bahasa Inggris yang dipilih dari 5 perguruan tinggi di Yogyakarta. Secara umum, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa terdapat 16 preposisi yang menimbulkan eror bagi para pembelajar yaitu about, among, as, at, because of, between, by, during, for, from, in, of, on, through, to, dan with dengan preposisi at sebagai preposisi yang paling banyak menimbulkan eror (26.06%). Semua eror yang ditemukan dapat dibagi ke dalam tiga kategori yaitu kesalahan pembentukan, penambahan, dan pelesapan. Dari ketiganya, kesalahan pembentukan adalah kategori eror yang paling banyak ditemukan (63.25%). Ada beberapa faktor yang menyebabkan para pembelajar melakukan eror tersebut. Faktor pertama yaitu adanya pengaruh dari bahasa Indonesia (L1). Kedua, eror terjadi akibat pengaruh dari bahasa yang sedang dipelajari (L2). Pengaruh dari L2 tersebut dapat dikategorikan lagi menjadi generaliasasi berlebihan dan pengabaian batasan kaidah oleh pembelajar. Ada pula beberapa kalimat yang dipengaruhi baik oleh L1 maupun L2 secara bersamaan. Kategori eror ini disebut dengan kategori ambigu.

This thesis aims to describe prepositional errors made by English language students in Yogyakarta by analyzing types of English prepositions that often cause errors, the categories of errors that arise, and the cause of errors. To achieve this goal, the researcher analyzed utterances of 20 English language students selected from 5 universities in Yogyakarta. In general, this study found that there are 16 English prepositions which usually cause mistakes for learners such as about, among, as, at, because of, between, by, during, for, from, in, of, on, through, to, and with. Among those 16 prepositions, at causes the most errors (26.06%). All errors found can be divided into three categories: misformation, additions and omissions. Of those three categories, misformation is mostly made by the students (63.25%). There are several factors that cause learners to produce errors. The first factor is the influence of Indonesian language (L1). Second, errors occur due to influence of the language being learned (L2). The influence of the L2 specifically are generalization and ignorance of the rules restriction. There are also several sentences influenced by both L1 and L2 simultaneously. This kind of error can be categorized into the ambiguous category.
