ADAT, LAND, AND RELIGION: THE POLITICS OF INDIGENOUS RELIGIONS IN INDONESIA

Tesis ini mengkaji bagaimana wacana adat dan agama dalam politik agama di Indonesia. Tesis ini berpendapat bahwa adat sebagai konstruksi historis telah berkontribusi pada misrepresentasi agama leluhur termasuk praktik masyarakat adat yang mencakup tradisi keagamaan dan pengetahuan tentang tanah sacral mereka. Tesis ini menunjukkan bahwa kebijakan negara saat ini sangat dibentuk oleh wacana adat vis a vis agama, yang secara faktual melanggengkan kebijakan kolonial. Tesis ini berfokus pada wacana adat sebagai konstruksi historis, politis dan akademis yang berkontribusi pada marginalisasi dimensi agama dari pengetahuan dan praktik adat. Dengan menggunakan teori genealogi dan analisis wacana, tesis ini membahas manifestasi historis dari konsep adat sebagai konstruksi kolonial, menekankan dampaknya dalam hubungan negara-adat Indonesia kontemporer. Untuk menganalisis data, penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan genealogi untuk melacak sejarah pemisahan Adat dan agama dalam konstruksi politik di Indonesia sejak masa kolonial (1800) hingga saat ini. Berkenaan dengan tahap penelitian perpustakaan, pengumpulan data akan menjadi semacam sejarah penggunaan istilah adat sebagai undang-undang, protokol resmi negara yang mencakup beberapa manuskrip yang relevan dan buku-buku terkait tentang karya-karya kolonial dan pasca-kolonial.

This thesis examines how the discourse of adat and religion which is exercised through the politics of religion in Indonesia. This thesis argue that adat as historical construction has contributed to misrepresent indigenous religion including indigenous people�s practices of their religious traditions and sacred land. This thesis shows that the state policy today strongly shaped by the discourse of adat vis a vis religion, which factually perpetuates the colonial policies. This thesis focuses on the discourse of adat as historical, political and academic construction which contribute to the marginalization of religious dimension of adat knowledge and practices. By using genealogical theory and discourse analysis, this thesis discusses the historical manifestations of the concept of adat as colonial construction, emphasizing their impacts in contemporary Indonesian indigenous-state relations. To analyze the data, this research uses a genealogical approach to trace the history of the separation of Adat and religion in political construction in Indonesia since the colonial period (1800) to the present. In regard to the library research stage, the collection of data will be a kind of history of using adat term as legislation, official protocol which including some relevant manuscripts and related books on colonial and post-colonial works.
