Penampilan fisik merupakan bagian dari diri seseorang yang pertama kali dapat dilihat, diamati, dan dinilai oleh orang lain. Bagi sebagian gay, penampilan fisik sangat penting untuk mendapatkan pasangan. Sementara body image merujuk pada bagaimana seseorang memandang tubuh mereka menggunakan persepsi dan perasaannya sendiri, yang akan menentukan apakah dirinya puas atau justru tidak puas dengan dirinya sendiri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apa saja standar tubuh ideal dalam dunia gay dan usaha-usaha yang dilakukan untuk memenuhinya. Selain itu, peran body image serta pengaruhnya dalam mencari pasangan juga menjadi fokus dalam penelitian ini. Responden penelitian berjumlah tiga orang gay yang sedang dalam tahap mencari pasangan dan/atau dalam upaya memperbaiki diri. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologis. Analisis data menggunakan Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Pengumpulan data diperoleh melalui wawancara mendalam pada responden dan significant others. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peran body image dalam kehidupan gay dipengaruhi oleh faktor gender, usia, dan sosial. Sifat dan kepribadian memegang peranan penting dalam memaknai body image, sehingga ketiga responden memiliki pemaknaan berbeda yang berpengaruh pada keinginan untuk mendapatkan pasangan serta pada usaha untuk mencapai bentuk tubuh ideal.

Physical appearance is a part of someone that can be seen, observed, and judged by others. For some gay men, physical appearance is very important to get a partner. Furthermore, body image refers to how someone views their body using their own perception and feelings, which will determine whether they are satisfied or even dissatisfied with themselves. The purpose of this study was to determine what is the ideal body standards in the gay's world and the efforts made to fulfill them. Moreover, the role of body image along the impact in finding partners is also the focus of this study. Respondents were three gay men who were still in the stage of seeking a partner or in an effort to improve themselves. The research method uses qualitative methods with phenomenological approach. The data is analyzed uses Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The data was collected through in-depth interviews with respondents and significant others. The results showed that the role of body image in gay life was influenced by gender, age, and social factors. Trait and personality play an important role in interpreting body image, so that the three respondents have different meanings of body image that influence the desire to get a partner and the effort to achieve the ideal body shape.
