LAYAR PADA RELIEF KAPAL BOROBUDUR: IDENTIFIKASI SAILING RIG DAN FAKTOR-FAKTOR PENDUKUNG PERKEMBANGANNYA

Penelitian ini membahas mengenai kapal dalam relief pada candi Borobudur; yaitu hal-hal apa yang bisa diungkapkan oleh adanya relief kapal serta identifikasi kapal-kapal yang mungkin menjadi objek dalam pembuatan relief tersebut. Identifikasi kapal dilakukan berdasarkan identifikasi sistem layar, atau sailing rig, dengan melihat konfigurasi susunan tiang layar, cara pemasangan layar, serta bentuk geometris layar. Juga dilakukan identifikasi faktor-faktor pendukung berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang membahas mengenai teknologi pelayaran, tradisi maritim, ekonomi, ketersediaan material, tujuan, ideologi, serta keadaan lingkungan. Penelitian ini berusaha menjawab dua permasalahan seperti berikut: 1. Informasi apakah yang dapat diungkap dari relief kapal yang ada di Candi Borobudur? 2. Kapal-kapal dagang dari mana yang kemungkinan berinteraksi dengan masyarakat pendukung candi Borobudur pada masa klasik? Penelitian bertujuan mengungkap hal-hal yang bisa diungkapkan berdasarkan keberadaan kapal pada relief candi Borobudur, misalnya interaksi antara masyarakat pendukung Borobudur dan wilayah pesisir, bagaimana para pemahat bisa menggambarkan kapal demikian, serta menentukan faktor-faktor apa yang menjelaskan keberadaan kapal tersebut. Kemudian juga mengidentifikasi kapal-kapal yang berinteraksi dengan masyarakat Borobudur sehingga mampu menggambarkan kapal dengan demikian detail dalam relief yang dibuat. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan bisa menjadi landasan serta acuan bagi penelitian-penelitian lainnya, khususnya yang membahas mengenai perkapalan dan pelayaran di wilayah Kepulauan Indonesia pada masa pra-Islam. Data berupa catatan perdagangan, objek temuan berupa komoditas dagang, dan juga prasasti-prasasti yang menunjukan adanya jaringan perdagangan menuju interior melalui sungai. Untuk melakukan identifikasi kapal melalui identifikasi sailing rig, digunakan data berupa foto-foto relief Borobudur dan juga hasil gambar oleh Conradus Leemans. Identifikasi didukung oleh data berupa kajian faktor-faktor yang mendukung seperti yang disampaikan oleh Jonathan Adams Penelitian menunjukan bahwa masyarakat Borobudur memiliki pengetahuan atau pengalaman yang cukup mendukung penggambaran kapal-kapal secara mendetail sebagai hasil interaksi daerah pedalaman dan pesisir. Kapal-kapal di relief Borobudur adalah kapal bertipe Ketch, dengan rig berupa layar tanjak. Hasil identifikasi kapal dan hasil identifikasi faktor pendukung mengindikasikan kemungkinan bahwa kapal-kapal tersebut berasal dari wilayah Asia Tenggara Kepulauan, khususnya perairan Kepulauan Indonesia. Asal kapal memperkuat pernyataan bahwa masyarakat Borobudur memiliki pengetahuan yang cukup mendukung pembuatan gambar kapal dengan tingkat detail tinggi pada relief.

This research discusses the ships depicted in the reliefs of Candi Borobudur; what are the things uncovered by the presence of those ships within the reliefs, and the identification of ships that might have been used as models in the making of said reliefs. Identifying the ships was done based on the identification of their sailing rigs, by looking at their masts configuration, sail attachment to the masts, and the geometrical shape of those sails. Factors leading to their development are also identified based on researches concerning sailing technology, maritime tradition, economy, material availability, purpose of construction, ideology, and environmental condition 1. What information are brought to light by the existence of ships in the relief of Candi Borobudur? 2. Whence the trading ships that possibly interacted with communities supporting Borobudur came from during the classical period? This research aims to understand information brought to light by the existence of those reliefs on Borobudur, such as the interaction between Borobudur and its community with coastal areas, how the artisans were able to picture those ships, and identifying what factors explain the existence of those ships. Furthermore, to identify the ships that interacted with Borobudur community and thus enable them to depict those ships with such detail in their reliefs. It is hoped that this research could then be a foundation and reference for further researches concerning ships and sailing in the pre-Islamic Indonesian Archipelago. Collected data in the form of Chinese texts concerning shipping, archaeological finds in form of trading commodities, and inscriptions that show the existence of riverine trade network. Identifying the ships were done through sailing rig identification using data in the form of photographs of the relief, and drawings by Conradus Lemans. Identification result further supported by studies of supporting factors as presented by Jonathan Adams. Results shows that Borobudur community had a certain knowledge or experience that enables them to depict ships in detailed manner as a result of interaction between the interior and coastal areas. The ships themselves were a type of Ketch, with tanjak rig. Ships and supporting factors identification indicates the possibility that those ships were from within Islands South East Asia, specifically the waters of Indonesian Archipelago. Ships origin supported the statement that Borobudur society have the necessary knowledge to create depiction of ships with such high level of detail on their reliefs.
