Resistensi terhadap Objektifikasi Wanita dalam Novel Their Eyes Were Watching God oleh Zora Neale Hurston

Wanita Afrika-Amerika di negara Amerika Serikat bagian selatan mengalami opresi ganda pada awal abad ke-20 sebagai akibat dari patriarki dan rasisme. Mereka berjuang untuk menemukan kebebasan untuk diri mereka sendiri terutama ketika sudah menikah. Their Eyes Were Watching God merupakan mahakarya Zora Neale Hurston yang mengisahkan seorang wanita muda Afrika-Amerika bernama Janie Crawford yang mengalami objektifikasi dalam pernikahan. Melalui perspektif Black Feminism, riset akademis ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi tipe-tipe objektifikasi perempuan yang ditemukan di novel dan juga untuk menemukan reaksi-reaksi yang dilakukan oleh tokoh utama untuk mengatasi objektifikasi. Selain itu, penelitian ini menggunakan teori objektifikasi dari Martha Nussbaum dan Rae Langton. Penelitian ini juga membahas strategi resistensi yang diusung oleh Kumea Shorter-Gooden yang diterapkan oleh tokoh utama untuk mengatasi objektifikasi. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa Janie Crawford mengalami sembilan tipe objektifikasi yang ia dapatkan dari suami pertama dan keduanya, Logan dan Jody. Selain itu juga menunjukkan resistensi dari Janie Crawford terhadap objektifikasi yang dihasilkan oleh gagasan self-definition. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa isu objektifikasi merupakan isu pokok pada novel ini, yang juga merupakan penggambaran umum pengalaman wanita Afrika-Amerika.

African-American women in the Southern part of the United States were experienced double oppression in the early twentieth century as a result of patriarchy and racism. They struggled to find freedom for themselves especially when they got married. Their Eyes Were Watching God is Zora Neale Hurston's masterpiece which tells a story of a young African-American woman named Janie Crawford who undergoes objectification in marriage. Through the perspective of Black feminism, this academic research is aimed to identify the types of the women' s objectification found in the novel and to determine the reactions that the main character takes in order to cope with the objectification. In addition, this research employs Martha Nussbaum and Rae Langton's theory of objectification. It also discusses the resistance strategies by Kumea Shorter-Gooden which the main character takes in order to cope with the objectification. This research reveals that Janie Crawford undergoes nine types of objectification which she got from her first and second husband, Logan and Jody. The research also demonstrates Janie Crawford's resistance against the objectification which is generated by the idea of self-definition. The research findings show that the issue of objectification is central in the novel, which is a common portrayal of African American women's experience.
