Contentious Revolutions and Southeast Asia's People Power Movements - Philippines' Yellow Revolution (1986) and Burma's 8888 Uprisings (1988)

Studi ini mempelajari relevansi atas kerangka dynamics of contention-nya McAdam, Tilly, dan Tarrow (McTeam) untuk politik bertentangan (contentious politics) di konteks non-demokratis melalui gerakan-gerakan people power yang terjadi di Filipina dan Burma pada era 1980-an. Namun, walaupun gerakan people power di Filipina mampu memperoleh perubahan rezim, gerakan di Burma gagal untuk mejudkannya. Maka dari itu, sebuah pendekatan komparatif akan digunakan untuk menguji seberapa konsisten kerangkanya McTeam jika digunakan untuk mengalisa dua gerakan yang serupa namun menghasilkan dua hasil yang berbeda. Oleh karena itu, studi ini akan menganalisa gerakan people power di Filipina dan Burma dengan dua proses yang diusul oleh kerangka McTeam yaitu- Actor constitution dan Polarization, bersama dengan mekanisme-mekanismenya.

This study assesses the relevance of McAdam, Tilly and Tarrow's 'dynamics of contention' framework for contentious politics in non-democratic contexts by applying it to the people power movements that occurred in the Philippines and Burma in the late 1980s. While the Philippine people power movement was able to culminate regime change, the Burmese people power was violently repressed. A comparative approach in analyzing two movements with divergent outcomes is taken in order to verify the 'robustness' of the dynamics of contention framework, in ways that analyses on single movements or a set of movements yielding similar outcomes could. This study would, therefore, like to analyze the two people power movements through two processes provided by the dynamics of contention framework, which includes Actor constitution and Polarization, as well as their constituent mechanisms.
