Perry Nodelman's Characteristics of Children's Literature in Karen Hesse's A Light in the Storm

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari sastra anak dengan menganalisis karya Karen Hesse berjudul A Light in the Storm untuk mengetahui apakah A Light in the Storm dapat dikatakan sebagai sastra anak dengan cara menemukan karakteristik sastra anak-anak dalam A Light in the Storm berdasarkan karakteristik-karakteristik sastra anak yang ditemukan oleh Perry Nodelman. Karakteristik tersebut adalah (1)simple but not simplistic (2) action oriented (3) presented from the viewpoint of innocence (4) didactic (5) optimistic and happy ending. Penelitian ini berfokus pada unsur-unsur intrinsik dari A Light in the Storm karena penulis menggunakan pendekatan objektif. Data dikumpulkan dan dianalisis dengan membaca A Light in the Storm kemudian menganalisa elemen intrinsiknya. Hasil analisis ini menyatakan bahwa lima karakteristik sastra anak Nodelman ditemukan dalam unsur-unsur intrinsik A Light in the Storm. Karya tersebut bisa dikatakan sebagai sastra anak sesuai dengan karakteristik sastra anak yang ditemukan oleh Perry Nodelman.

This research attempts to study children's literature by analysing Hesse's A Light in the Storm in order to know how far A Light in the Storm can be said as children's literature and find the characteristics of children's literature in A Light in the Storm based on Perry Nodelman's characteristics of children's literature. Those characteristics are (1) simple but not simplistic (2) action oriented (3) presented from the viewpoint of innocence (4) didactic (5) optimistic and happy ending. This research focuses on the intrinsic elements of Hesse's A Light in the Storm and objective approach is used by the writer. The data were collected and analyzed by reading the Hesse's A Light in the Storm then analyze its intrinsic elements. The result of the analysis is that five characteristics of children's literature suggested by Nodelman are found in intrinsic elements of A Light in the Storm. The work is considered as children's literature according to the characteristics of children's literature suggested by Perry Nodelman.
