Skripsi ini juga membahas hubungan antara permasalahan minuman keras di Amerika dengan novel The Great Gatsby. Tujuan dari skripsi ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan kebiasaan konsumsi minuman keras rakyat Amerika dan untuk menjelaskan hubungan antara larangan minuman keras yang terjadi di masyarakat dan yang terjadi di novel The Great Gatsby. Skripsi ini menggunakan pendekatan New Historicism oleh Colebrook dan metode riset pustaka untuk alat menganalisis data. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa larangan minuman keras yang diterapkan pada tahun 1920-an di Amerika merupakan hasil dari kebiasaan konsumsi minuman keras masyarakat Amerika, kebiasaan konsumsi minuman keras masyarakat Amerika dianggap berbahaya karena berdampak buruk terhadap kesehatan manusia dan kenyamanan lingkungan sehingga pemerintah Amerika menerapkan larangan minuman keras. Penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa novel The Great Gatsby merupakan gambaran dari gaya hidup masyarakat Amerika yang berhubungan dengan minuman keras pada era larangan minuman keras tahun 1920-an.
This research discusses the liquor prohibition happened in 1920s America triggered by the American drinking habit which is depicted in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The objectives of this research are to explain the drinking habit of American society and to describe the connection between 1920s American Prohibition with novel The Great Gatsby. This research employs new historicism approach promoted by Colebrook as its theoretical framework and the library research as its method of research. The result of this research shows that the liquor prohibition which applied in 1920s America was a result of the American drinking habit. American drank liquor in their daily life as it was the common drink they had in every occasions. This habit results the American's health which got affected by some diseases. Thus in order to limit the society liquor consumption, the American government created The Liquor Prohibition. The research also finds that The Great Gatsby is a picture of society condition in 1920s America as the story of Gatsby and his party guests represents the society of 1920s America. The party Gatsby thrown regularly is one of the picture of American drinking habit when the Prohibition was around. Gatsby is the picture of bootlegger who lives in the Liquor Prohibition era.
