Kenikmatan dalam Minuman: Bir di Batavia 1900-1942

Penelitian ini membahas tentang perkembangan bir di Batavia dari tahun 1900 sampai dengan 1942, dilihat dari pengaruh kehadirannya dalam kehidupan sosial dan ekonomi pada waktu itu. Batavia selaku kota pusat pemerintahan, menjadi tempat tumbuh kembangnya budaya barat dalam kehidupan masyarakat pada awal abad ke-20. Bir menjadi salah satu media perluasan modernitas ala Barat paling penting. Pada awal penjelasan akan dipaparkan mengenai gambaran kehidupan masyarakat Batavia pada awal abad ke-20 serta berbagai jenis minuman beralkohol yang terdapat di sana. Batavia sebagai pusat Hindia Belanda merupakan tempat awal terjadinya persentuhan dan mendapat pengaruh terbesar dengan budaya barat, salah satunya mengonsumsi minuman beralkohol impor. Mengonsumsi minuman beralkohol impor menjadi penanda tingginya status sosial seseorang pada waktu itu. Bir merupakan salah satu minuman beralkohol impor yang paling banyak dikonsumsi oleh penduduk Batavia. Tingginya konsumsi bir ini menimbulkan dilema tersendiri. Hal ini dibahas dalam bab yang berjudul di antara cinta dan benci. Bab ini menjelaskan upaya pemerintah memanfaatkan tingginya konsumsi bir tersebut dengan cara meningkatkan produksi bir, baik melalui impor hingga pendirian pabrik. Selain itu, pemerintah memperoleh keuntungan dari keberadaan bir tersebut dengan menerapkan pajak. Di sisi lain, semakin banyaknya konsumsi bir turut meningkatkan angka kriminalitas di Batavia, sehingga memunculkan gelombang protes dari masyarakat. Meskipun demikian, bir tetap dicintai karena menghasilkan keuntungan ekonomi dan kenikmatan kehidupan modern bagi penduduk Batavia. Di bab terakhir akan menyimpulkan penjelasan yang telah dipaparkan dalam bab-bab sebelumnya.

This study discusses the development of beer in Batavia from 1900 to 1942, seen from the influence of its presence in social and economic life at that time. Batavia as the capital city of Netherlands Indies, became the place for the growth of western culture in people's lives in the early 20th century. Beer is one of the most important Western-style expansion media for modernity. The explanation started with a description about the life of the people of Batavia in the early 20th century, as well as the various types of alcoholic beverages found there. Batavia as the center of the Netherlands Indies was the initial place of contact and got the biggest influence with western culture, one of which consumed imported alcoholic beverages. Drinking imported alcoholic beverages is a sign of a person's high social status at that time. Beer is one of the most imported alcoholic beverages consumed by residents of Batavia. The high consumption of beer raises its own dilemma. This is discussed in a chapter entitled between love and hate. This chapter explains the Government's efforts to utilize the high consumption of beer by increasing beer production, both through imports and the establishment of factories. In addition, the government got benefit from the existence of the beer by applying taxes. On the other hand, the increasing consumption of beer helped increase the crime rate in Batavia, resulting in a wave of protests from the public. Nevertheless, beer remained loved because it produced economic benefits and the enjoyment of modern life for the residents of Batavia. In the last chapter, it will summarize the explanations described in the previous chapters.
