THE ROLES OF DIVE CENTERS IN CONSERVING CORAL REEFS TO SUPPORT TOURISM INDUSTRY IN GILI TRAWANGAN

Gili Trawangan merupakan destinasi wisata yang populer bagi wisatawan scuba diving dan snorkel. Gili Trawangan terkenal akan ragam terumbu karang dan kehidupan lautnya. Namun, akibat perkembangan industri pariwisata yang cepat, ini mengakibatkan terjadinya degradasi pada terumbu karang di Gili Trawangan. Terdapat beberapa dive center beroperasi di Gili Trawangan. Sebagai salah satu pemangku kepentingan utama, dive center memiliki peran penting dalam konservasi terumbu karang untuk mendukung industri pariwisata di Gili Trawangan. Penelitian ini memiliki dua objektif. Pertama, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi peran-peran dive center dalam konservasi terumbu karang. Kedua, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fokus-fokus dari peran dive center dalam melaksanakan kegiatan konservasi untuk mendukung industri pariwisata di Gili Trawangan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dan dilakukan di lima dive center yang beroperasi di Gili Trawangan. Ditemukan bahwa dive center di Gili Trawangan memiliki berbagai peran dalam konservasi terumbu karang melalui program-program yang mereka jalankan. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa fokus-fokus dari peran dive center dalam konservasi terumbu karang beragam mulai dari meningkatkan kesadaran dan motivasi wisatawan serta publik untuk terlibat dalam konservasi terumbu karang, bertindak sebagai pelaku bisnis pariwisata yang bertanggung jawab terhadap lingkungan, dan menyediakan edukasi untuk menyebarkan informasi dan pemahaman terkait ekosistem terumbu karang. Beberapa dive center juga telah menerapkan upaya-upaya kolaborasi dalam konservasi terumbu karang dengan berbagai pemangku kepentingan dalam implementasi program konservasi terumbu karang. Semuanya dari kegiatan ini untuk menerapkan peran-peran dive center dalam konservasi terumbu karang untuk mendukung industri pariwisata di Gili Trawangan.

Gili Trawangan is a popular tourism destination among scuba divers and snorkelers. It is renowned for its diverse coral reefs and marine life. However, the rapid growth of tourism industry has degrading impact on the condition of coral reefs. There are a large number of dive centers operating on the island. As one of primary stakeholders, dive center has an important role in conservation of coral reefs to support tourism industry in Gili Trawangan. This research has two objectives—identifying the roles of the dive centers in conserving coral reefs as well as emphasizing their roles in conserving coral reefs to support tourism industry in Gili Trawangan. This is a qualitative research, conducted at five dive centers in Gili Trawangan. The research reveals that the five dive centers have been carrying out numerous roles in conserving coral reefs to support tourism industry on the island. Dive centers’ roles could be seen through coral reef conservation programs they implement. It is discovered that each of the dive centers has various focuses in implementing their roles. The focuses of their roles include raising awareness on the importance of conserving coral reefs and providing motivation for conservation, behaving as responsible tourism business and providing education to pass information and understanding about coral reef ecosystem. These dive centers have also established a close collaboration with stakeholders in order to implement their roles in conservation of coral reefs. All of these coral reef conservation programs have obviously represent dive centers’ roles in coral reef conservation and support tourism industry in Gili Trawangan.
