THE SUSTAINABILITY OF AQUACULTURE ACTIVITIES IN THE PERI-URBAN AREA OF YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA

Keberlanjutan kegiatan akuakultur di daerah peri-urban diteliti dengan melihat tingkat keberlanjutan ekonomi, sosial dan lingkungan dengan metode kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Sebagian besar akuakultur menerapkan beberapa strategi seperti penggunaan sistem semi-intensif, kolam multifungsi, dan pakan alternatif. Potensi keberlanjutan kegiatan akuakultur di daerah peri-urban ditunjukkan dalam 3 faktor dimana kegiatan akuakultur sebagai tambahan penghasilan rumah tangga, rendahnya konflik penggunaan sumberdaya, dan penting untuk konservasi lingkungan. Kemudian, penelitian ini juga memperlihatkan tantangan-tantangan terkait polusi air dan masalah keberlanjutan rumah tangga perikanan dalam kegiatan akuakultur. Keberlanjutan kegiatan perikanan di daerah peri-urban cukup baik. Hal tersebut dapat dilihat dari aspek keberlanjutan potensi kegiatan akuakultur dari segi ekonomi, sosial dan lingkungan. Potensi kegiatan perikanan harus dikelola, sedangkan tantangan yang ada perlu segera di tangani oleh pihak-pihak terkait.
This research intends to assess strategies, potentials, and challenges to the sustainability of aquaculture activities in a peri-urban area of Yogyakarta Municipality in Bantul Regency. The sustainability of aquaculture activities in the peri-urban area was explored by looking at the level of economic, social, and environmental sustainability using qualitative and quantitative methods. Most of the aquaculture use several strategies such as semi-intensive system, multifunctional pond, and alternative fish feed to sustain the activity. As the potentials to the sustainability of aquaculture activity in the peri-urban shown in three factor where it supplements primary household income, relatively low conflict over resources, and valuable to conserve the environment. Whereas, this research reveals some challenges involving water pollution and household continuity issues. Aquaculture activity in this peri-urban area was relatively sustainable since the potential of aquaculture displays economic, social and environmental sustainability which should be maintained. Several challenges for aquaculture in the peri-urban area should be tackled promptly, by multiple stakeholders.
