The Formation Process and Semantic Relations of Compound Words in The Articles of The New York Times Online Newspaper

INTISARI Penelitian ini melihat proses pembentukan dan hubungan semantik dalam kata majemuk yang terdapat pada koran digital The New York Times. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikasikan kata majemuk berdasarkan teori Delahunty dan Garvey. Dalam teori tersebut, klasifikasi proses pembentukan kata majemuk dibagi menjadi nomina, kata kerja, adjektiva, adverbia, dan neoklasik. Sedangkan hubungan semantik dalam kata majemuk dibagi ke dalam tiga kategori, yaitu endocentric, exocentric, dan coordinative. Dari 12 sumber artikel yang diteliti, penulis menemukan 118 data. Jenis kata majemuk yang paling sering muncul adalah kata majemuk nomina dengan jumlah 56 (47.45%). Kemudian, jenis semantik relasi dalam kata yang sering muncul pada artikel adalah endocentric dengan jumlah 90 (76.3%). ABSTRACT This research looks at the compound word formation process and semantic relations in the article in The New York Times online newspaper. It aims to identify and classify the compound words into their word formation process and their semantic relations based on Delahunty and Garveys������¢���¯���¿���½���¯���¿���½ theory. The classification of compound word formation processes are compound nouns, compound verbs, compound adjective, compound adverbs, and neo-classical compound. While the semantic relations are divided into endocentric, exocentric, and coordinative. From 12 articles that have been analyzed, the researcher found 118 data. The most frequent type of word formation process is compound noun with 56 (47.45%) occurrences. Moreover, the most semantic relations used in the articles is endocentric compound with 90 (76.3%) occurrences. Keywords: compound words, word formation, semantic relations, The New York Times.
